Nobody knew George Pagan was going to die from suffering a medical episode in a Rikers Island jail — but a Bronx judge experienced with the city Correction Department’s operations gave a prescient warning of the events that preceded his demise.
A 19-year-old Rikers Island detainee was beaten and repeatedly slashed after correction staff moved him to a chaotic unit where other detainees somehow got into his locked cell in the predawn hours and left him unconscious and bleeding on the floor, his mother tells the Daily News.
“The last 12 years were a struggle for her. She had untreated mental illness that presented strongly in her 50s and it contributed to so much pain and suffering,” daughter Nicole Haymo said during her eulogy at Leyden’s New Jersey funeral Sunday.
