hope in terms of changing that through sanctions, it will take decades. 33 years ago, 1989, i saw the students in tiananmen square bring the chinese state to a frozen halt for a month. and then, of course, the massacre that followed. nobody in the west thinks that the chinese communist party will lose its power over china. is it possible that what happened in 1989 might happen again? what happened in tiananmen square was a moment that has defined, if you like, everything that has happened since. the chinese communist party, from that moment in 1989, made up its mind. it believed, and still does, that the reason the soviet union fell apart was through weakness, was through tolerating western values, by allowing those cracks to open up, into which those freedoms started to filter in.
