Cherry Blossom Peak Bloom Dates Predicted for April 2-5


The National Cherry Blossom Festival (March 20-April 11) will offer both virtual and in-person events

The last of February s snow has barely melted, but that s not stopping spring. The National Park Service announced Monday the predicted peak bloom for D.C. s cherry blossoms is April 2-5.
Peak bloom is defined as the day when 70 percent of the Yoshino cherry blossoms are open.

This year s expected bloom dates match up well with the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which is set for March 20-April 11. The fest will offer both virtual and in-person events, activities and other ways to celebrate the season. ....

Down at the wharf on Akaroa Harbour, the waves are lapping lazily against the pilings. The harbour is milky today, silt from the Rakaia and the Rangitata rivers hanging in the water, having finished its long journey from the Southern Alps and across the Canterbury Plains. It turns the water a powdery blue from a distance, but from where we sit, it is icy and clear.

It s been said that arriving in Kororāreka/Russell is a bit underwhelming, with nothing distinctive or special to the area to greet visitors, let alone to honour its long, rich Māori history. There s the sign by Matauwhi Bay, mostly overgrown, and nothing on the wharf except a lot of advertising, but that s about to change thanks to a bold new initiative that began with Kororāreka Marae, was picked up by the original wharf trust and then by its successor, the Russell Community Wharf Trust. ....
