The Way We Were: Alexis de Tocqueville on Women and the Family
We are all too familiar with the decline of the American family and its associated phenomena: divorce, deadbeat dads, female-headed households, promiscuity, abortion, out-of-wedlock births, domestic violence, juvenile delinquency, and addiction. The list of pathologies is long, and the statistics are grim. It was not always thus. The most famous visitor to the United States, Alexis de Tocqueville, praised the well-ordered home life of its citizens.
