'Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry' Review: Fame and Family

A documentary captures the creation of Eilish’s multiple-Grammy-winning debut album, recorded at home but poised to go global.

Billie Eilish, the ultramodern pop star who’s both colorfully gothic and establishment-friendly, is a fascinating subject: vividly creative, offhandedly vulnerable, barely visibly self-conscious. And also, a teenager. “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry,” the new documentary about her rise, finds her shaping global aesthetics while cocooned in a close-knit family, and treats both circumstances with equal casualness. In this film, all of Eilish’s interactions are human-scale, or smaller.

Billie Eilish revealed that she’s recorded a new album in lockdown during an interview with Stephen Colbert on “The Late Show” Tuesday night. It’s the result of her first prolonged period of not touring since her career began in earnest in 2016.
“I don’t think I would’ve made the same album, or even the album at all, if it weren’t for Covid,” she tells Colbert. “That doesn’t mean it’s about Covid at all, it’s just that, when things are different in your life, you’re different. That’s just how it is. So, I have to thank Covid for that, and that’s about it.”

The DIY and independent music scenes have been expanding for years, as at-home recording technology improved in leaps and bounds. But Covid-19’s circumstances dramatically accelerated that growth, leading amateurs and budding musicians everywhere to start making music from their homes. Last April, toward the beginning of the pandemic, Splice, which offers several key tools for at-home recording artists including production tools, a beat maker and hundreds of thousands of royalty-free samples for songs, told
