Whitbread Posts Pretax Loss In FY; Sales Down 71.4%
DUNSTABLE (dpa-AFX) - Whitbread PLC (WTB.L) reported a statutory loss before tax of 1.01 billion pounds for the 52 weeks to 25 February 2021 compared to profit of 280.0 million pounds, prior year. Loss per share was 481.9 pence compared to profit of 124.7 pence. Adjusted loss before tax was 635.1 million pounds compared to profit of 358.3 million pounds. Loss per share before adjusting items was 287.6 pence compared to profit of 165.4 pence.
Fiscal year statutory revenue from continuing operations declined to 589.4 million pounds from 2.07 billion pounds, previous year.

Nomura and UBS take global banks’ Archegos hit to $10bn
Today’s news from UBS and Nomura take global banks’ total losses related to the collapse of Bill Hwang’s Archegos Capital Management to around $10bn.
The $10bn total includes the likely damage expected in the April-June quarter as remaining positions are wound up, as well as the many billions already lost.
It’s an astonishing trail of damage caused by a single, obscure family office which managed to take huge, leveraged bets on media and tech stocks, before imploding in March.
The Japanese bank [Nomura] booked about 245.7 billion yen ($2.3 billion) of losses in the three months ended March 31, driving the bank to its biggest quarterly loss since 2009, and will take another hit of about 62 billion yen this fiscal year. UBS Group AG, which hadn’t previously signaled any Archegos impact, said it sees a combined hit of about $861 million through the second quarter. ....

Greene King revives team member support fund for third lockdown  
Brewer and pub operator Greene King has launched a new Covid emergency support fund using voluntary salary sacrifices from its executive board and leadership team alongside a company donation in order to help its team members during lockdown three.
The new team member support fund mirrors the first edition which ran from March to June 2020, through which Greene King donated £650,000 in grants for team members to access essential food and retail vouchers.
Once again, the fund will again be managed independently by Licensed Trade Charity.
“It’s a really tough start to 2021, back into lockdown and all of our pubs closed,” Nick Mackenzie, CEO at Greene King, said. “Most of our team members are furloughed, and we know how severely this is affecting some of our people financially, so we wanted to bring back the team member support fund to help the members of our team who need it most at this rea ....
