Mascot Hall of Fame reopens to public on Saturdays


After being closed for a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, kids can again see the wacky high jinks of Benny the Bull, the Jazz Bear, KC Wolf, Mr. Met, Oriole Bird, Tommy Hawk and other furry mascots as they clown around in downtown Whiting.
The Mascot Hall of Fame at 1851 Front St., at the end of 119th Street between the BP Whiting Refinery and Whiting Lakefront Park, has reopened to the public on Saturdays only for the time being.
“We are open to the public Saturdays only for now, but we are offering field trips, group outings and room rentals Tuesday through Saturday, Mascot Hall of Fame Executive Director Karen Anaszewicz said.  Our goal is to offer the safest, cleanest environment in which our guests can feel comfortable and confident during their visit.” ....

Ten days later, the chair Al usually occupied at the Thanksgiving table would sit empty. The husband to his wife of 70 years, father of three and grandfather of six died on the holiday.
Al’s daughter, Sandra Noe, was herself suffering from COVID-19, which she contracted while caring for her sick parents, when the virus forced Al’s hospitalization.
Noe, 66, is no stranger to helping elderly shut-ins weather isolation. ....

Investment firm Sixth Street paid $700mn to take a minority stake in the US division of BP’s pipeline business, Bloomberg news reported April 12.
Citing a person familiar with the deal commenting on condition of anonymity, Bloomberg reported that the 49% stake for Sixth Street forms the basis of a future midstream joint venture. With its headquarters in Chicago, BP’s pipeline division owns and operates just under 7,000 km of oil and gas infrastructure, including connections to BP’s refinery in Whiting, Indiana. ....

STAMFORD A city man accused of hoarding gasoline, smoke grenades, spike strips and a stolen gun following an incident in which he injured four police officers last year was court-ordered to undergo mental evaluation and rehabilitation at the state’s only maximum security psychiatric hospital on Wednesday.
Judge Gary White ordered Amin Hasan, 44, transported to Whiting Forensic Hospital after a psychiatric evaluation in February found that he is not competent to assist in his own defense. ....
