Virginia poised to abolish death penalty, first southern state to do so

Philip Van Cleave, the president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League reacts to Democratic Governor Ralph Northam's state of emergency declaration ahead of a planned rally for Monday. Van Cleave also explains why he does not support universal background checks or bans on assault rifles.
Virginia’s House of Delegates cleared the way for the state to become the first in the South to abolish the death penalty.
The House voted 57-41 to end capital punishment after the Senate had done so earlier this week. Two Republicans joined all Democrats in voting for the bill. Virginia’s Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam has said signing the bill is a top priority.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – The Virginia Senate passed a bill Wednesday that would abolish the death penalty, a measure that if passed into law would mark a major policy change for a state that over its centuries-long history has led the nation in the number of executions it has carried out.
The Democrat-controlled chamber approved the bill in a 21-17 vote that split along party lines and was seen as a key hurdle for the measure. Advocates now expect the House version of the bill to easily clear that chamber, and Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam has said he supports the legislation.

The Virginia Senate Wednesday passed a bill on Wednesday that would abolish the death penalty, putting it on the path to becoming the first Southern state to do so.
The Democrat-controlled chamber approved the bill in a 21-17 vote, split along party lines, following a lengthy, and at times emotional, floor debate.
Advocates expect the House version of the bill to easily clear that chamber, The Associated Press reported.
With the state's Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam supporting the legislation, the prolific death penalty state appears to be on the verge of eliminating capital punishment after carrying out executions longer than any other.

Virginia's Democrat-led Senate debates abolishing death penalty

“They [inmates] will dwell in our penitentiaries until the very last breath that they take it is fair and just but is also fair for the victims, as well,” Mr. Stanley said.
In addition to ending the death penalty, Mr. Surovell’s bill would commute the death sentences for the only two men currently on death row for capital murder — Anthony Juniper and Thomas Porter — to life in prison.
Christopher Newport University released a survey Tuesday that found 56% of registered Virginia voters support repealing the death penalty.
The data showed that support abolishing capital punishment fell along party lines, with 74% of Democrats backing the proposal and 64% of Republicans opposing it.
