Although Buddy Checks already were happening prior to the coronavirus pandemic, American Legion Family members recognized an even greater importance over the past year. The results: thousands upon thousands of phone calls, emails, social media posts, postcards and safely conducted in-person visits were made to fellow veterans in the midst of COVID-19.
American Legion Post 512 in Carmel, Calif., has made Buddy Checks an ongoing program during the pandemic – and recently saw just how critical one phone call can be.

The Major General William H. Gourley VA-DoD Outpatient Clinic announced on Thursday that they had vaccinated 1,000 veterans. According to spokesperson, Jack Murphy, the 1,000 veterans were all 65 years old and older. Over recent weeks the VA clinic has been giving the first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. More vaccines are available for local veterans. An additional 400 vaccine doses will be administered on Friday, March 5. This vaccination is for Veterans 55+ who are already enrolled in the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. Call 650-496-2535 to register for the vaccination.
