COVID vaccinations among Maria Parham staff remain voluntary


HENDERSON — Maria Parham Health has yet to join the list of North Carolina hospitals that are requiring employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19, even though one of its corporate partners has taken that step.
The Henderson hospital as of Monday afternoon was “strongly encouraging our employees to get vaccinated, but not requiring it at this time,” said Donna Young, Maria Parham’s coordinator of marketing and communications.
Young’s comments reiterated a statement hospital leaders issued Friday in response to a question from The Dispatch.
“At this time, Maria Parham Health is strongly encouraging and supporting all of our team members to become fully vaccinated,” it said. “There is significant evidence that grows daily indicating that the COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective. Understanding that the situation changes daily, we are committed to carefully evaluating the research and the level of COVID-19 activity in our communities as we make this very important decision independent of approval from the [U.S.] Food and Drug Administration.

Pro basketball star and Wilmington native Michael Jordan has made a $10 million gift to the Novant Health Foundation to open two medical clinics in New Hanover County, according to a news release Monday.
The two new clinics are slated to open in early 2022, Novant Health officials said in the release.
“I am very proud to once again partner with Novant Health to expand the Family Clinic model to bring better access to critical medical services in my hometown,” Jordan said in the release. “Everyone should have access to quality health care, no matter where they live, or whether or not they have insurance. Wilmington holds a special place in my heart and it’s truly gratifying to be able to give back to the community that supported me throughout my life.”

Additional community endowment board members named

The New Hanover Community Endowment group has announced the remaining additions to its 11-member Board of Directors, according to a news release.
Six people, all New Hanover County residents, were named to the board, on top of five people previously selected when the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners in October established the nonprofit corporation charged with overseeing the estimated $1.25 billion from the sale of the county-owned New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
The nearly $2 billion sale to Winston-Salem-based Novant Health is expected to close early next year. A new regional local board charged with overseeing the hospital after the sale has selected the new members to the endowment board.
