Wistron to resume production in India after labor dispute

A Wistron Corp (緯創) plant in India is set to restart operations, after a riot broke out at the production base spurred by a labor dispute in December last year, Indian media reported on Tuesday.
Citing Wistron Smart Devices chief executive officer David Shen (沈慶堯), the Times of India said that the company has taken steps to improve standards at its Narasapura factory in Karnataka state, and would resume operations soon.

Wistron India plant to resume operations soon after riot: report

New Delhi, Feb. 9 (CNA) A plant owned by Taiwanese contract electronics maker Wistron Corp. in India is set to restart operations shortly after a riot broke out at the production base as a result of a labor dispute in December, according to an Indian news outlet.

Last week, the Karnataka government held talks with top executives of Wistron and six staffing firms in a bid to get Apples contract manufacture to restart operations at its plant near Kolar in Karnataka at the earliest.

"We also set up a 24-hour grievance hotline in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and English to ensure all workers can voice any concerns they may have anonymously. We are deeply committed to our business and employees in India. We are working diligently on corrective actions to ensure this does not happen again," the statement said.
Wistron's statement comes after the Karnataka Labour Department too flagged violations at Wistron. It found that it did not maintain up to date salary and attendance records, no proper employment details were maintained and workers were asked to do 12-hour shifts. 
Wistron had committed to invest Rs 2,850 crore in Kolar plant and increase its total headcount to 18,000. It currently employs over 10,000 people. Investments include manufacturing beyond smartphones to IoT products and biotech devices.

Apple puts Wistron on probation after it finds violations at India plant

Earlier, Wistron said it has removed its Vice-President in charge of India and has admitted to lapses in paying its workers here.

Apple has placed its supplier Wistron on probation after it found that the Taiwanese manufacturer violated its supplier code of conduct at its facility in India.
"Apple employees and independent auditors hired by Apple have been working around the clock to investigate the issues which occurred at Wistron’s Narasapura facility. While these investigations are ongoing, our preliminary findings indicate violations of our Supplier Code of Conduct by failing to implement proper working hour management processes. This led to payment delays for some workers in October and November," a statement from Apple said.

Dec. 16—For contract workers at Taiwanese manufacturing giant Wistron, the dream of working at the “iPhone company” has soured since violence broke at the site following allegations of violation in wage payments and work hours.
The state police have so far picked up over 150 contract workers and looking for 5,000 more who were allegedly involved in the incident that led to the closure of the manufacturing unit at Narasapura, about 60 km from Bengaluru.
“For months now, we worked hard, woke up at 4 am to reach the pick-up point on time and toiled for 12 hours everyday, as this was a dream to build a career…to settle down,” said a contract employee, requesting anonymity.

Violence broke out at Taiwanese manufacturer Wistron's plant near Bengaluru on December 12, with workers saying they were unhappy over the alleged non-payment of wages.
Production was disrupted at the facility, which is situated in Kolar district and manufactures iPhones. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered in connection with the incident, booking 7,000 people, including 5,000 contract workers.
