Even Tesla can’t overcome Australian hostility to electric cars

Tesla and the electric-car industry generally thrive in the world’s richest nations. Not so in Australia, where even tractors outsell electric vehicles two to one.
More than four decades after Mel Gibson’s super-charged Ford Falcon roared across the country in
Mad Max, the car-loving nation is defying a global shift to electrification. Battery-powered vehicles made up just 0.7 per cent of Australia’s new car sales last year, while in the UK and European Union, the figure soared to more than 10 per cent.

Bayern Munich head coach Hansi Flick admits he is considering his future after the holders were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain.
Bayern's 1-0 return-leg win in Paris on Tuesday was not enough to overturn last week's 3-2 first-leg defeat in Munich as PSG marched into the semi-finals at the Germans' expense.
"Everyone understands that I am thinking about my future," Flick told Sky after Bayern striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored the only goal on Tuesday.

Volkswagen will give employees in Germany a 2.3 percent pay increase as part of a new labor agreement with the IG Metall union.
The deal covers 120,000 employees at six plants in western Germany. It starts in January and will run for 23 months until November 2022.
"We have reached a collective agreement with a sense of proportion and reason that does justice to the particularly challenging environment since the start of the pandemic," VW's chief negotiator, Arne Meiswinke, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Elon Musk Wanted To Make Diess Head of Tesla

Elon Musk Wanted To Make Diess Head of Tesla
The current Chairman of the Board Herbert Diess, joined Volkswagen in 2015, but according to a report from German NTV, VW was not the only one trying to reach the BMW manager. Even Elon Musk offered Diess the chief position at Tesla.

No other German auto boss is pushing the restructuring of his company in the direction of electromobility as consistently as Herbert Diess. The VW boss also makes no secret of the fact that the electric pioneer Tesla, who has long been ridiculed by many other German corporate leaders, is a role model in many respects. Tesla boss Elon Musk has also expressed his respect for Diess' work at Volkswagen on several occasions. As "Torque News" has reported before, the relationship between the two is even closer than previously known. As a result, Musk even wanted to bring Diess to Tesla as a boss, reports NTV.

Will Robert Lewandowski be fit to play for Bayern Munich vs PSG in the Champions League?

Card image cap

Will Lewandowski be playing the second leg against PSG?
"No, [next week] is still too early," Lewandowski
had told
Sky Sports. "I'll do everything I can to get back on the pitch, but only when I feel really good and safe. It's not a good feeling to sit at home."
The striker picked up the injury during Poland's World Cup qualification game against Andorra in March, which resulted in a 3-0 victory that Lewandowski scored twice in.
The forward was substituted in the second half, and will now have to continue to make do with watching his side's Champions League second quarter-final against the French champions from the sidelines.

Bundesliga | Borussia Dortmund vs. Manchester City: UEFA Champions League probable line-ups, match stats and LIVE blog!

With Erling Haaland to the fore, Borussia Dortmund have every chance of getting the win they need to overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit in their decisive UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg at home to Manchester City on Wednesday (kick-off: 8pm BST).
Latest
Haaland has been unplayable in this only his second campaign of Champions League football, reaching double figures for goals in just seven appearances. He wasn't on the scoresheet in the away leg, but did set up captain Marco Reus for an all-important away goal. BVB might have had another, but for a contentious refereeing decision against English teenager Jude Bellingham in the first half. Interim coach Edin Terzic could welcome back former City youth player Jadon Sancho following six weeks out with a thigh injury, though the England international is unlikely to be risked from the start - if at all. Ansgar Knauff did his chances of deputising no harm with a winning goal from the bench against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday. The 19-year-old winger was a surprise starter in Manchester, but Terzic may opt for the more experienced Thorgan Hazard in such a high-stakes contest. A 1-0 win or victory by at least two clear goals will send Dortmund through to the semi-finals, where either holders Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain await.

Bundesliga | A tactical look at how Eintracht Frankfurt beat Wolfsburg, using Bundesliga Match Facts powered by AWS

Watch:
Frankfurt ruthlessly efficient
Frankfurt's chance conversion rate was crucial to their victory. Adi Hütter's side had nine attempts on Wolfsburg's goal, compared to 20 on theirs. Just five of their shots were on target, and four of them went in. Eintracht, who have now scored at least once in 23 consecutive games, clearly exceeded their xGoals value of 1.32. Wolfsburg also exceeded their xG of 1.82, but clearly it wasn't enough for them.
Frankfurt scored their goals with remarkable self-confidence. The first two - scored by Daichi Kamada and Luka Jovic - each only had a 10 percent chance of success, a clear sign of their attackers' clear-headedness. Frankfurt also plundered their four goals despite having just 44 percent of possession. For such an attacking encounter, it was also notable that Frankfurt and Wolfsburg were each only called offside once.

Madrid march on, Bayern stumble and Robben is back: Talking points from around Europe
AFP Sport rounds up some of the main talking points from across the continent:
– A great few days for Zidane –
Real Madrid followed their 3-1 Champions League quarter-final first-leg win over Liverpool by beating Barcelona 2-1 in a thrilling Clasico, and Zinedine Zidane’s side remain, remarkably, on course for a La Liga and European Cup double.
A brilliant back-heel finish by Karim Benzema — his ninth goal in his last seven league appearances — and a free-kick from in-form Toni Kroos gave Real their fourth straight La Liga win and a result which keeps their momentum building.

Will Choupo-Moting be Bayern's key man in season-shaping week?

Has the Cameroon international impressed for Bayern in Robert Lewandowski's absence? @AfricanFtbl 🎙️🎧 pic.twitter.com/joQnRhJQ36— Goal Africa (@GoalAfrica) April 11, 2021
Much of the pre-game talk focused on the absence of the Poland striker and how the Bavarian giants were going to replace a frontman who’s netted 35 Bundesliga goals this term, 10 higher than the second top scorer in Europe’s top five leagues—Cristiano Ronaldo.
FC Hollywood revealed on Monday that the near-unplayable centre-forward completed his first running session but is still expected to miss the reverse fixture in Paris; a huge blow, but an eventuality they prepared for once he returned from the international break with that knee injury.

The one-time Germany international, who has hopes of being part of Germany's squad at this summer's European Championships, sits down with
bundesliga.com to discuss his and Wolfsburg's season so far, what booking a place in the Champions League would mean, and why he believes the Wolves would deserve it.

Union Berlin draws 1-1 as Bayern worries grow before CL game

Leipzig cut Bayern’s lead to five points with six rounds remaining with a 4-1 win at Werder Bremen.
Bremen made a good start until Dani Olmo broke the deadlock in the 23rd. Alexander Sörloth grabbed two more for Leipzig before the break, and Marcel Sabitzer made sure of the win after Milot Rashica pulled one back with a penalty.
BAYERN IMPROVISES
Bayern coach Hansi Flick, who said Friday his squad wasn’t as strong as the previous year’s, started with reserve players Josip Stanisic and Tiago Dantas. It was a debut for the 21-year-old Stanisic, a defender, and first start for Dantas.

Union braced for Bayern Munich backlash after PSG defeat
Berlin (AFP) – Union Berlin are steeling themselves for a challenging trip to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Saturday as the European champions look to shake off their midweek defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.
Bayern’s Champions League defence is under threat after PSG striker Kylian Mbappe inspired the French giants to a 3-2 victory in Munich on Wednesday, leaving Hansi Flick’s side up against it heading to the Parc des Princes next week.
Union are just outside the top six in Germany and bidding to qualify for Europe next season for the first time in the club’s history, but their Swiss coach Urs Fischer expects a tough time at the Allianz Arena.

Panasonic Bets on Tesla 'Beer Can' Battery to Unloc...

Card image cap

Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive officer, first unveiled the 4680 battery at Tesla’s Battery Day in September as a “massive breakthrough” in cell technology that will make it possible for his company to produce EVs that sell for $25,000, roughly a third less than Tesla’s most basic Model 3. While Tesla plans to make the cells in-house, it has also asked its oldest battery supplier, Panasonic, to begin producing them as well.
The catch: the thicker and more voluminous 4680 cells, named after their dimensions of a 46-millimeter diameter and 80-millimeter height, are still largely unproven. Industry experts even question whether the batteries, which resemble a downsized version of the aluminum cans used for sodas and beer, are possible to mass produce.

Ismael on his journey to Oakwell

Valerien Ismael started as a goalkeeper in junior football and planned to be a PE teacher as he did not think he would have the quality to play professionally. But he eventually became lifelong friends with Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry while reaching the top level of club football, where he aims to return with Barnsley.
Since being appointed in October last year, the Reds head coach has been immersed in his job at Oakwell – lifting them from fourth-bottom in the Championship to fifth after 40 games – and has spoken very little about his glittering career as a player including a stint at Bayern Munich.
