The abrupt closure of Quebec newspaper publisher Metro Media will end news coverage of local government in parts of the province's two largest cities, media observers say.
"It's the end of hyperlocal coverage in Montreal and Quebec City. There's going to be no coverage of borough councils."
The newspaper company's CEO blames Montreal's decision to ban the Publisac.
Metro Media, which publishes nearly 20 local newspapers in the Montreal and Quebec City regions, is ceasing operations.
The union says it wants to negotiate "better working conditions and better wages."
