Rare shark caught in Taitung
A rare bluntnose sixgill shark, a species believed to have been on Earth since before the dinosaurs, was caught by Taitung County fishers on Sunday. The shark is a rare sight as it generally lives at a depth of 200m to 1,000m below sea level, said Wu Jui-hsien (吳瑞賢), a research assistant at the East Coast Marine Biology Center, a unit of the Fisheries Research Institute. Although most modern shark species evolved to have five gills, the bluntnose shark still has six, just as their ancient ancestors had, Wu said. The 420kg fish was caught

Blacksmith 'yang water' tradition being kept alive in Tainan

Tainan’s Lee Yi-nan (李一男) on Friday kept a centuries-old family tradition alive by drawing the special “iron quench water” from an ancient well at noon on Friday. The day was Taiwan’s traditional Fifth Month Festival Day (五月節) on the lunar calendar.
Proprietor of the Chuan Li Blacksmith Shop (泉利打鐵鋪), Lee headed to his neighbor’s ancient well, which reportedly has a 200-year history dating to the Ming Dynasty, and is the only remaining “octagon well” in Tainan’s Yanshui District (鹽水), with eight-sided brickwork lining its inner wall.
Lee, 81, is a fifth-generation master blacksmith who has passed the family tradition to his son,

Highways and Byways: Traces of Shintoism in eastern and southern Taiwan

Only in the final decade of its 50-year occupation of Taiwan did Japan make a serious effort to introduce the Shinto religion to its colony.
After the launch in 1937 of the Kominka Movement — an attempt to bury historical and cultural connections between Taiwan and China beneath pro-Tokyo sentiment — Taiwanese were encouraged to speak Japanese, adopt Japanese names and embrace facets of Japanese culture, including Shintoism. In the space of a few years, the number of Shinto shrines around the island quickly rose from fewer than a score to more than 200.

Highways & Byways: Charming antiquity: Tainan's Yanshuei District

It’s as if the outside world conspired to rob Yanshuei (鹽水) of its importance and prosperity.
As waterways filled with silt, access to the ocean — which had made it possible for this little town, several kilometers from the sea in the northern part of Tainan, to become a major entrepot — was lost. The north-south railway, a key driver of economic development during the 1895-1945 period of Japanese rule, never arrived. Then, in the 1970s, the sugar industry went into terminal decline.
Like Taiwan’s other old settlements, Yanshuei used to be a walled town. The defensive barrier is long
