The UK government's pandemic shame

The UK government’s pandemic shame
Mar 17,2021 - Last updated at Mar 17,2021

LONDON — Many rich countries have at times failed to provide enough personal protective equipment (PPE) for their healthcare workers during the coronavirus pandemic. But the performance of the United Kingdom’s government — which has repeatedly urged the public to “Clap for Our Carers” — has been particularly shameful.
Although the government’s vaccination drive now dominates the headlines, we must not lose sight of the fact that at least 850 health- and social-care workers in England died from COVID-19 between March and December 2020. And these workers remain at risk.

Britain's vaccine gamble | Jordan Times

Britain’s vaccine gamble
By Sanjeev Krishna and Yolanda Augustin
LONDON — The British have often taken great pride in dubious achievements, from the “victorious” retreat from Dunkirk during World War II to the bare-minimum Brexit agreement recently reached with the European Union. The development of a COVID-19 vaccine on British soil, however, was a genuine triumph. And yet, by delaying the delivery of second vaccine doses, the government is set to undercut this feat, and its overall pandemic-containment strategy.
The manufacturers of all three vaccines so far approved in the United Kingdom, the homegrown AstraZeneca/University of Oxford DNA vaccine, and the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccines, recommend delivering the second dose 3-4 weeks after the first. And yet the UK government has decided to leave a 12-week gap between doses.

An open letter to the Prime Minister

We the undersigned view with much apprehension and concern the current status of the Covid-19 outbreak in the country.
Our national metrics paint a very bleak picture of Covid-19 pandemic management. Despite movement control orders (MCOs) and other health interventions, the daily reported cases are not decreasing.
The Cumulative Incidence Density (per 100,000 population) and the Infection Rate (active cases per 1,000 population) is not flattening, with the latest national Infection Rate registered at 0.879 per 1,000 population, meaning between eight and nine persons are actively infected for every 10,000 people.
The testing positive rate (rolling seven-day average) is rising, registering 8.9 percent on Jan 3,2021, well above the World Health Organization's (WHO) 5.0 percent benchmark of effective pandemic control and containment.
