image captionLaunching his leadership campaign, Sir Jeffrey said he was convinced Northern Ireland's "best days are ahead"
could be about to come in handy.
He may have conquered second time around in the fight to become the new party leader, but now the strategising really starts.
He will have to devise a battle plan for the next assembly election.
There is also the question of how he intends to unite his divided troops over the direction the party should take.
Even for an experienced politician whose rise through the ranks of unionism has been steady, it will be a tough task.

Edwin Poots is new leader of Northern Ireland's DUP

Mr Poots is a traditionalist-leaning agriculture minister long known as an opponent of the protocol.
He called on Friday for an end to bickering in the unionist movement and said he would reach out to other unionist leaders.
“This party has been the authentic voice of unionism and will continue to be the authentic voice of unionism under my leadership,” he said.
“I will be a leader in unionism who will be reaching out to other leaders in unionism.”
One of the other parties, the Ulster Unionist Party, is also set to hold a leadership election after leader Steve Aiken resigned on Saturday.

Northern Ireland's centenary eclipsed as Unionists agonise over leadership vacuum

Alana Cahoon is highly engaged with the political scene in Northern Ireland and hopeful for a fresh start when new leaders are chosen for its unionist parties in the coming weeks.
That is despite the forthcoming departure of the high-profile student campaigner and fledgling unionist party member from her birthplace to a new life at university in Scotland in September.
Ms Cahoon's situation is not an untypical experience over the 100 years of Northern Ireland’s existence but goes to the heart of why its centenary celebrations are a very muted affair.
News bulletins this week were dominated by talk of the "crisis of unionism”. At the very moment that Northern Ireland reached its landmark anniversary, the unionist tradition that drove its creation is widely seen as rudderless. Two unionist political leaders stepped down to make way for new blood.

Did dark money and dirty tactics swing the Scottish election?

Thursday’s Scottish elections were not short of news stories. A record number of Scots voted. The Scottish National Party fell one seat short of a majority – in part as a result of tactical voting for Unionist parties in seats such as Dumbarton.
It’s hardly surprising that unionists voted tactically. The split among three Unionist parties – Tories, Labour and Lib Dems – has long been a boon to nationalists.
But over the weekend, I found myself wondering whether – and how – Unionist tactical voting had been coordinated. So I decided to do some digging.
And what I found is pretty concerning – to put it mildly.
