Youth Justice Agency raises £6,500 for Air Ambulance NI | Newry Times | Latest Newry News, Newry Sport and Newry Business for Newry City

Chief Executive, Declan McGeown, presented a cheque for £6,594.25 to Air Ambulance representative Grace Williams at Woodlands Juvenile Justice Centre in Bangor.

Declan McGeown said, “This is a tremendous achievement by our staff and the young people with whom we work and it is all the more remarkable given the Covid-19 constraints we have all faced throughout the past year.
“Our charity partnership arrangement creates a win-win situation.
“It provides an opportunity for our young people to give back to the community through various fundraising activities, while Air Ambulance has also benefited through the receipt of much-needed funds.”

Staff and young people from across the Agency’s teams in Belfast, Ballymena, Newtownards, Banbridge, Enniskillen and Foyle held various fundraising events ranging from coffee mornings and street collections to raffles and cake sales. ....

Justice Minister launches public consultation | Latest Newry News, Newry Sport and Newry Business for Newry City

The consultation will consider the proposed strategic approach to support and challenge women and girls who are on the cusp of offending or who have already turned to crime.

With a focus on working with women and girls throughout their contact with the justice system and particularly at an earlier stage to assist them in following a pathway away from offending.
Naomi Long said, “Every year there are a small number of women and girls who come in contact with the justice system, because of their behaviour.
“We want to adopt an approach that focuses on the range of contact with justice; on what can be done to prevent and divert women and girls from crime; supporting them to change in the community, and helping improve their lives and circumstances on the occasion they enter and leave custody. ....

Two children test positive for Covid-19 in Woodlands Juvenile Justice Centre

Two children have tested positive for Covid-19 in Northern Ireland’s only youth prison.
The prisoners, who are being held in Woodlands Juvenile Justice Centre in Bangor, Co Down, had also tested positive before being admitted to the facility.
Justice Minister Naomi Long said she was “aware of the two new cases in Woodlands” and explained that the children had been placed in the facility’s isolation unit upon their arrival.
“In line with protocols, the young people have been tested again and, as both received positive results, they will remain in the isolation unit where they will be cared for in line with Public Health guidance,” added the Alliance Party leader. ....

Teen spared prosecution of Ballyholme Beach party attack on PSNI officer

A teenager who kicked a female police officer in the face at a mass beach party in north Down during the summer lockdown has had the charges against him withdrawn.
The 17-year-old, who was one of four youths arrested on Bangor’s Ballyholme Beach at the end of May, is instead to meet with his victim or a police representative.
More than 400 youths had gathered on the beach to drink alcohol and party in breach of social distancing guidelines and sections of the crowd attacked cops who attempted to disperse them.
During the disorder a female PSNI officer was booted in the face by a 17-year-old when she told him he shouldn’t be drinking on the beach. ....
