Thursday, 4 February 2021, 9:02 am

Community Committee against the Oranga Tamariki (Youth
Justice Demerit Points) Amendment Bill.
The petition

respond to the complex and layered challenges facing our
rangatahi. The Bill proposes a Youth Justice Demerit Point
System believing this will put an end to the existing
situation of perpetual reoffending by youth without
consequences.
According to Lifewise Youth Leader,
Aaron Hendry, the Bill demonstrates a lack of understanding ....

Holy hell.
Because they are coming out with the most outlandishly stupid stuff.
Like Paora Goldsmith who thinks that as part of New Zealand history our kids should be educated about how Smith and Caugheys developed their business model, rather than how the Treaty of Waitangi and the subsequent egregious breaches are fundamental parts of our history that have shaped Aotearoa New Zealand society.
New Zealand’s first draft plan to teach our own history in schools has been slammed as “unbalanced” by the Opposition National Party.
The long-awaited draft curriculum for what are called “Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories” is structured around just three “big ideas” – all about Māori and colonisation. They are: ....

Whatever the reason the country’s figures are looking remarkably good.
A faster and stronger economic rebound from the Covid-19 pandemic will see the government’s finances headed back to surplus sooner than expected, according to the Treasury. ....

It has never ceased to surprise me that those who profit at the expense of others are so unaware of the harm suffered by those they exploit, and are so convinced that they have a right to do the exploiting and that their profit is a proper and justifiable reward .

The government’s recent housing package may work; will it do enough?
Trick Question: Does New Zealand have a capital gains tax on housing? If you ask the Prime Minister she will say not. It is true that her government is increasing the scope of the ‘bright-line test’ on non-family homes to . ....

The Social Services and Community Committee has set a closing date for public submissions on the Oranga Tamariki (Youth Justice Demerit Points) Amendment Bill, which was referred to the committee on 21 July 2020. Submissions will close on Wednesday 3 February 2020.
This Member’s Bill would introduce a youth demerit point system based on the Justice Seriousness Scale, with weighted interventions at each offence. The bill aims to target offending before it becomes habitual, and ensure more intensive interventions to modify behaviour, if demerit points accumulate. ....
