animals, including lions, bears, leopards and 18 endangered bengal tigers. officials say only a monkey has not been accounted for. the humane society lashed out at the governor for allowing a statewide ban for buying and selling exotic animals to expire in april. at the end of the day there will be legislation. officials say they had no choice but to kill the animals because of the danger they posed to the public. now, the man who owned those animals was released from prison just a few weeks ago. terry thompson served a year for possessing illegal firearms. he and his estranged wife kept the animals in cages on a 73-acre private reserve. friends say they were animal lovers but he, thompson, had been convicted of animal cruelty. officials have not said what might have caused him to kill himself. secretary of state hillary clinton is in kabul, after after this morning for talks with afghan president and other top officials there. she s expected to assure president k ....

vegas. and there s crashes all the time in this sport. let s talk about what made this one so bad. what made it so bad is the fact that you have a field, which is bigger than the indianapolis 500, on a racetrack which is almost half as small. the oval here at the las vegas motor speedway is a mile and a half oval. and in indianapolis, it s a 2 1/2 mile oval. so you have a lot more spacing of cars. as you look at the wreck right now, you have a much fatter track so cars can go four wide, which means they are more bunched up going into turns, and dan wheldon starting at the back of the pack going for that $5 million grand prize. he had already passed over 1/3 of the field going into the 11th lap, and when the wreck began to happen, he was behind the group. and basically, jumped one of the other cars and went into the retaining fence on turn two. and you can see the massive pileup. it was quoted several drivers called it the worst wreck they have ever seen in their rac ....

wake-up call. i m christine romans in for carol costello. this morning race officials will begin deciding how they ll investigate a wreck that killed a two are-time indy 500 winner. 33-year-old dan wheldon was one of a record 34 cars on the las vegas track. on lap 12, the unthinkable. cars spinning out of control, bursting into flames, several actually going airborne. three drivers were treated for injuries, wheldon was airlifted to the hospital where he eventually died. the race was canceled. but the drivers did return to cirque tl track five times as a tribute, some of them in tears. dan wheldon s factr in law remembers one of the last times they spoke. i just told him that i just wanted one thing, dan, i told him, i said you need you to win. i didn t say i need you to win, but that would be the birthday present i d like to have from you. he said my car is kind of slow, they re working on it. so hopefully we ll do our best. i said have a safe race. he was supposed ....
