Livetalk: We are talking about COVID-19 and the Summit for Democracy convened by U.S. President Joseph Biden amid fears of waning democracy worldwide.

Tanzanians this week are marking the 60th anniversary of independence from Britain, and a long journey toward the goal of building their own, democratic nation. But despite forming a multiparty system, Tanzania has always been dominated by one party, the Party of the Revolution.

The United States is launching a virtual summit for democracy on Thursday, hosting more than 100 world leaders, civil society activists and journalists in what it says is the largest gathering of its kind ever held. As VOA’s Senior Diplomatic Correspondent Cindy Saine reports,

U.S. President Joe Biden acknowledged his own country’s vulnerabilities as he hosted a virtual Summit for Democracy that brings together world leaders, civil society and the private sector to "set forth an affirmative agenda for democratic renewal."
