Maloney takes early Finn Gold Cup lead as champions reflect on Olympic threat

New Zealand’s Andy Maloney, one of the victorious America’s Cup crew earlier this year in Auckland, took a first-day lead in the 65
th Finn Gold Cup at Porto - which double as the Finn World Championships - after placing third and second in the first two races.
Meanwhile his America’s Cup teammate and defending champion Josh Junior is in fifth position after placing tenth and fifth.
Junior, one of four previous world champions involved in this prestigious event, hasn’t raced a major Finn event since his victory in 2019.
Switzerland’s current world number one Nils Theuninck is four points adrift of Maloney on nine points, having finished second and seventh. ....

98 days out from the Tokyo Olympic Games, Australian Sailing Team Finn sailor and Rio Olympian Jake Lilley (QLD) has wrapped up the 2021 Open Finn European Championships in Vilamoura, Portugal with a top ten finish in a world-class fleet. After ten races over five days, Lilley finished the event in a strong eighth place.
Defending European Champion and dual Olympian Zsombor Berecz (HUN) won the regatta ahead of Rio Olympic Champion Giles Scott (GB) with Switzerland s Nils Theuninck third.
The 2021 Finn European Championships saw 49 sailors from 29 nations battling it out on the waters of Vilamoura on the south coast of Portugal. Many sailors, including Lilley, used the regatta as a warmup event to the crucial 2021 Finn Gold Cup, the World Championships of the Olympic Finn Class, in Porto, Portugal in three weeks time. ....

With a personal best achieved in the Finn European Championships in 2020, the hope was that Donaghadee Sailing Club sailor Oisin McClelland would make a further improvement in Vilamoura, Portugal this week at the 2021 championships, an important milestone on his road to the Finn Gold Cup, (the final Tokyo Olympic Qualifier), next month in which he seeks to gain the last spot in Tokyo for Ireland.
But apart from a solid sixth place taken in race six, McClelland was, unfortunately, unable to improve on his 23rd spot at the Polish 2020 Euros and finished 33rd overall in a fleet of 49 yesterday. ....

It’s often said that a change is as good as a rest and Giles Scott will certainly be hoping that is the case this week at the Finn European Championships in Vilamoura, Portugal.
The reigning Olympic champion has had his attention focused on the America’s Cup recently, where he finished third with Sir Ben Ainslie’s INEOS Team UK outfit in New Zealand.
But, on his return to Finn action for the first time in six months, Scott is now fully focused on tuning up for the Tokyo 2020 Games – starting with the event in Portugal which will see a fleet of around 50 sailors from 28 nations take part in ten races over five days. ....
