Lady Dons hoopsters making a difference on and off the court -


Alyssa Garcia and Julia Cariquitan are both a part of the success of the Cathedral Catholic girls basketball team.
Alyssa, is a senior, so helps lead her team and is off to pursue neuroscience at TCU in the fall.
Although Julia is only a junior, she has already made a difference by starting the Filipino American Student Association, to raise awareness of her culture. Something that Alyssa has also helped her in succeeding with.

Kaibigan, Portland State’s Filipino American Student Association hosted their 16th annual Pilipino Culture Night (PCN) on May 22. As COVID-19 restrictions prevented the club from performing on campus as it had in the past, the Kaibigan executive board made the event entirely online, creating a three-hour show demonstrating Filipino culture. 
 
Kaibigan is named after the Filipino word for friend. Kaibigan’s mission is to “unite and empower Filipino American students through educational, social, cultural and political activities while celebrating the Filipino American experience.” 
 
Their culture night was meant to accomplish their mission through Zoom by showing a wide variety of video performances. Several traditional Filipino dances were performed in traditional outfits as well as other performances, such as contemporary song covers by Kaibigan members and a slam poetry presentat ....

A limited group of student mentors gathered in the Asian American and Pacific Islander Student Center to help test safety protocols.

Recognizing many students are struggling with feelings of isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Compton Union Building (CUB) staff are working with campus safety experts to expand the building’s capacity for students, particularly on the fourth floor.
During a normal year, the fourth floor is one of the busiest spots in the CUB with hundreds of students gathering daily inside the various student cultural centers, the Gender/Identity Expression and Sexual Orientation Resource Center (GIESORC), and the Center for Undocumented Initiatives. ....

Frustrations mount after racist Zoom bombings affecting Gonzaga, WSU minority groups [The Spokesman-Review, Spokane, Wash.]
Dec. 15 Local and federal authorities are still investigating how multiple people last month invaded a virtual Gonzaga University Black Student Union meeting with racial and homophobic slurs and imagery.
Likewise, Washington State University Police remain on the hunt for whoever shared racist imagery and slurs during a WSU Black Student Union meeting in September. Less than two months later, WSU’s Filipino American Student Association dealt with a similar intrusion.
Students, faculty and investigators say the events, known as Zoom bombings, were among the more frustrating parts of virtual college learning this fall. The sentiment has been shared by others, including other student minority associations,, as Zoom bombings have been a nationwide virtual business hazard during the COVID-19 pandemic. ....
