Veterinary Teaching Hospital a WSU success story during pandemic | WSU Insider

May 7, 2021
By Devin Rokyta, College of Veterinary Medicine
The absence of clients in the lobby, faces hidden behind masks and all-too-familiar social distancing signs at Washington State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital are lingering reminders of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A year ago, the virus was rapidly spreading, and University and veterinary hospital officials were grappling with how to safely provide their patients care and emergency services not available elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest.
Today, even though many restrictions remain in place, the number of patients being seen at the veterinary hospital exceeds pre-pandemic levels. Like the University, it is inching closer to a full reopening, and health officials say it is one of many WSU success stories during the pandemic.

WSU researchers test wastewater for COVID-19

WSU researchers are testing wastewater from the Pullman campus to detect traces of COVID-19.
“We are testing nine facilities on campus, most of these are the residence halls that have people, and we are also looking at wastewater streams from the CUB and offices that have people in them,” said Phil Weiler, WSU vice president for marketing and communications.
WSU auxiliary services maintenance employees use telescopic dippers to collect samples twice a week. The samples are then placed into sanitary containers before being transported to the lab, where results are processed within a 24-hour period, said Jason Sampson, director of WSU Environmental Health and Safety.

Washington State University has launched a new COVID-19 dashboard featuring the most up-to-date information on the status of the pandemic among the WSU Pullman Cougar community.
Positivity rates, active cases and the 14-day positive case count are among the metrics being tracked and updated daily on the new website.
“The best way for WSU to engage with our community around mitigating the transmission and impact of the coronavirus is to share data openly about what is occurring,” said Guy Palmer, professor of pathology and infectious diseases and one of the leaders of WSU’s COVID-19 task force.

By Steve Nakata, Division of Student Affairs
Recognizing many students are struggling with feelings of isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Compton Union Building (CUB) staff are working with campus safety experts to expand the building’s capacity for students, particularly on the fourth floor.
During a normal year, the fourth floor is one of the busiest spots in the CUB with hundreds of students gathering daily inside the various student cultural centers, the Gender/Identity Expression and Sexual Orientation Resource Center (GIESORC), and the Center for Undocumented Initiatives.
