Setting goals part 1 | Tribune Online

Share
We are at the end of the year and by now we must have our goals for next year ready. Goals are very critical to our success. Goals are landmarks on our way to success. Goals helps us to track our success as we journey through life. When we sit down to draw up our goals it helps us to organize our thinking so we can constructively build our lives. It will help us know what we need to do , how to get them done and when to to do them. Goal setting helps us foresee our future and make plans how to arrive at that future. When we set goals we are able to intelligently know what resources we have at our disposal to execute our purpose and where we find we are short of resources we plan how to get what is needed to get the job done. The importance of goal setting cannot be over emphasized. ....

In Metala, Popoola goes cultural, spiritual

Share
Metal artist, Dotun Popoola, continues his exploration of the cultural and spiritual in making museum-quality art.
IN ‘Metala’, his sixth solo art exhibition opened at The Grandeur Hotel, Lekki, Lagos on December 19, metal artist, Dotun Popoola has continued his synergetic journey in art.
That trip sees him exploring the cultural and spiritual mix of the number 13 with metallic objects in the show under the new entrant, Art Pantheon.
Ongoing till December 30 and curated by Nana Sonoiki, the exhibition theme, Popoola explained, came as an answer to connecting his last solo show with the next one.
“After my last solo exhibition, which had 15 works on display, I needed to reduce the number, so 13 and 7 came to mind. I settled for 13, as I suddenly realised that 13 is ‘metala’ in Yoruba. And ‘la’ means to breakthrough in Yoruba.” ....

What a year! | Tribune Online

IT crept in like any other year hiding its devilish details from many guessworkers who claim the power of clairvoyance.
By the time it brought its Corona content, even worship centres were shut down as deaths untold came in its trail.
One particular painful death that came close to me through it was the former governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Isiaka Ajimobi.
We were in the Ikere Ekiti home country of Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) in March when he invited me to sit next to him and one of the issues he raised with me was the deadly virus and the view that the weather around us makes it less potent. ....

Assumption of Office and Properties | Tribune Online

Sample 1: “Soyombo, a professor of Sociology, however, told Sunday Tribune in an exclusive interview that he had since resumed office since his acting appointment was of immediate effect.”(More heads to roll in UNILAG, Tribune Online, 15 August, 2020)
We note the presence of the word resumed in this clause: “he had since resumed office.” To appreciate the nature of this error, we have to realize that Prof Soyombo, the newly appointed Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, had never occupied the office, and was about to start work in that capacity at the time the event was reported. Now the question is: Is the verb resumed the appropriate one to describe this event? Not at all.The writer has obviously confused the verb resumed with assumed, for the context does make it clear that the reference is to the fact that Prof Soyombo was about to commence work as Acting Vice Chancellor. It is important also to note the noun forms of these verbs: The noun fo ....

Bakare's acidic pulpit arrows | Tribune Online

Share
Two anecdotes have been used to justify the controversial pulpit tirades of senior pastor of Citadel Global Community Church in Lagos, Tunde Bakare, whose video went viral last week. One is that famous Obinde proverb, popularised by former governor of Lagos and Osun States, Olagunsoye Oyinlola. Second is one I stumbled into during the past week, a rationalisation of ancient Yoruba treatment of their warriors and the morality of their warfare.
In 2014, at the grand finale of the second term campaign programme for Rauf Aregbesola, his predecessor as Osun governor, Oyinlola had regaled the campaign audience with the Obinde story. I was there. While submitting that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the centre had been unfair to Yorubaland, Oyinlola likened the injustice and unfairness to the maltreatment of Obinde, an unfortunate widow. He called it iyanje Obinde (the cheating of Obinde). ....
