Fulford Residence put on legal notice to halt closure

Constitutional lawyer Julius Grey sent a letter to the directors of the 131-year-old downtown Fulford Residence, a private, non-profit home for autonomous senior women, calling on them to halt the process leading to its planned closure in September. The residence is owned by the Anglican Church.
âWe hereby put you on notice to immediately pause the decision to close Fulford, for a period of six months and set up a committee of board members, family representatives, stakeholders from the government and health sector, and interested citizens concerned with senior care, heritage, and minority language services, to conduct a thorough review on viable strategies for maintaining Fulford within 15 days from reception of [this letter],â says a May 5 legal letter sent by Grey to The Right Reverend Mary Irwin-Gibson, President of the Board of Directors and Bishop of Montreal; and David McEntyre, Vice-President and Director of the Board of Directors. âOtherwise, we will be ....

Five residents have moved out of the Fulford Residence since the beginning of April, a month after their families learned that the venerable downtown establishment for senior women is closing and three more will have left by the end of this week.
But even as plans are being worked out for the women, whose average age is 92, to move to other residences or long-term care centres, there is a grassroots initiative to prevent the closing.

I have become addicted to a Facebook page called Montreal Historical Photos Historiques. I can spend hours looking at Ste-Catherine St. in the 1950s, with its all-English signage; St-Hubert St., the queen of French neon signs, in the 1960s; St-James St. in the 1940s, when it was the main artery of Canada’s pre-eminent financial district.
There are images of Montreal’s gilded age, when McGill University’s splendid Victorian faculty buildings were private homes. Not to mention those that were demolished by politicians and developers insensitive to beauty.

Grassroots group hoping to stop 150-year-old seniors' home for women from closing

MONTREAL
A grassroots movement is hoping to stop the Fulford Residence, a private seniors home for women that dates back to confederation, from closing.
As the month began, Fulford residents were told they would have to find somewhere else to live in six months, as the COVID-19 pandemic worsened the home s financial situation.
In addition, in 2020, about 20 nurses and orderlies found employment elsewhere owing to the uncompetitive salaries the home was able to offer.
Now, the community is pushing back putting pressure on the home s board of directors to reconsider the decision to close.
We want to bring together the government, private funding, to see if maybe Fulford can be saved, said resident Sharon Hill s son Chris Holcroft. ....
