FedEx and UPS Are Fierce Rivals. How They Formed an Extraordinary Plan to Work Together to Deliver the Covid-19 Vaccine

The speed at which pharmaceutical companies have been able to develop and test multiple successful Covid-19 vaccines is truly a testament to science. New technology has enabled vaccine makers to dramatically cut the amount of time it took to bring the new vaccines to market.
I don t want to undermine the significance of that work in any way, because it s honestly quite extraordinary by any standard. At the same time, I think it s worth highlighting the effort that is now going into actually moving all of those doses into the market.
It s especially interesting considering FedEx and UPS, two companies that are usually fierce competitors, came up with a plan to divide up the U.S. in order to be sure the vaccine made it as quickly as possible. As soon as the Pfizer vaccine was given emergency authorization, that plan went into action. ....

COVID-19 vaccine distribution: FedEx, UPS to 'split country into two'

“In some cases, that relationship is interdependent, with them shipping the kitting and us shipping the vaccine to certain states, so we’re relying on one another,” Smith said.
Both Smith and Wheeler spoke before the Subcommittee on Transportation and Safety as part of a hearing on the logistics of transporting a COVID-19 vaccine.
Senators asked Smith and Wheeler questions including the priority vaccines take during the peak holiday shipping season, ability to quickly ship doses to rural areas and points in the process that are concerns or need regulatory relief.
Smith said FedEx will be able to deliver vaccines to locations throughout the U.S. “absolutely, positively overnight,” with capacity reserved for the Operation Warp Speed distribution mission. ....
