Plan to erect permanent Capitol fence lambasted

D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton is one of many locals who hope the unsightly fencing is only a temporary measure. She told The Washington Times that she wants “to keep the People’s House open to the people.”
“Permanent fencing would send an un-American message to the nation and the world, by transforming our democracy from one that is accessible and of the people to one that is exclusive and fearful of its own citizens,” she told fellow members of Congress on Feb. 11, when she introduced the United States Capitol Complex Act to block permanent fencing.
“It would tell the world that the most powerful nation must rely on crude barriers for safety instead of state-of-the-art intelligence and security protocols,” said Mrs. Norton, the District of Columbia’s nonvoting congressional representative. ....

We’ve been reporting on the troubling question of what are the National Guard still doing in Washington, D.C. at this point and why are there reports that they intend to keep them through the fall?
So far there’s been no explanation given as to why that’s happening and what the rationale is, what the “threats” are supposed to be. No one is being told, including the governors whose units were being used or Congressional Republicans. Rep. Lisa McClain, who is on the House Armed Services Committee, is demanding answers from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the matter. It’s ridiculous that there’s so far been in excess of $480 million spent without any explanation to Congress as to why it is continuing. ....

Farmer Writes: first calf of 2021 on the ground

After a long wait of 303 days, our first calf of 2021 finally arrived in the latter days of January.
As expected with that length of gestation, it was a large bull calf, though he only needed a small pull with ropes to deliver him safely.
With the barrage of rain and snow in the days since he was born, it’s no wonder he didn’t want to make an appearance.
The re-modeled creep gates in our shed are working exactly as we hoped and after a couple of days he learned to go in and out of the bedded middle pen on his own. This should mean a big saving on straw for us, as before this we had to bed a corner of each pen for the calves. Hopefully we’ll have two more calves to join him soon enough. ....
