Tierra Williams advocates for representation, activism through Ferguson Township Supervisor campaign


Tierra Williams moved to State College three years ago with her son and has actively engaged herself in the community since. Now, she is a candidate running for Ferguson Township Supervisor.
Williams has 1,598 votes in the primary election as of May 24 and is running against Lisa Strickland, who currently has 1,650 votes. The primary results will not be finalized until early June, and the general election will be Nov. 2.
Williams ran for the position during the primary elections as part of the joint slate, “Our Communities Can’t Wait.” The campaign includes Penn State student and formerly incarcerated activist Divine Lipscomb, artistic director for FUSE Productions Richard Biever, and Penn State clinical law professor Gopal Balachandran — all of whom ran for State College Borough Council. ....

Social justice poetry event to feature State College politicians, activists, artists


Politicians, activists and various artists will be featured at a social justice poetry slam on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Tudek Park in State College.
Tierra Williams, a local activist and candidate for Ferguson Township Supervisor, helped organize the event, which will include spoken word and musical performances.
Williams said the poetry slam is an opportunity for fellow candidates and artists to “speak on political issues. giving them a chance to pour their souls out to the community.”
Those performing include local figures such as Ezra Nanes, Charles Dumas, Camille Yvette-Welsh, Laura Schadle, Aquila Kikora Franklin and Peter Buck. Several topics they are expected to cover include the coronavirus, global warming, immigration and women’s rights, according to a press release. ....

PA United PAC updates 'Our Communities Can't Wait' candidate slate


PA United announced four petitioned candidates for its slate for State College Borough Council and Township Supervisor of Ferguson Township.
Tierra D. Williams, co-leader of the 3/20 coalition, is running for Ferguson Township Supervisor, according to a PA United press release.
The three open seats on the State College Borough Council also have PA United candidates: Divine Lipscomb, local activist and recipient of 2020 StandUp Award for Ethical Leadership, Rich Biever, local business owner and director of FUSE Productions, and Gopal Balachandran, former public defender and current assistant professor of clinical law at Penn State.
According to the press release, Our Communities Can’t Wait” encourages candidates with “diverse life experiences” to be elected, rather than “traditionally ‘electable’ candidates. ....

Tierra Williams Running for Ferguson Township Supervisor


Local activist, poet and performer Tierra Williams announced she will seek election to the Ferguson Township Board of Supervisors this year.
“No matter where we come from, or how much money is in our wallets, we all work hard for our families,” Williams said in a statement. “I am running for Ferguson Township Supervisor, for future generations, and the advancement of the State College area.”
Williams moved from Mississippi to Centre County with her son three years ago and has been involved in multiple community organizations, including the 3/20 Coalition. Since last summer Williams has been co-leader of the advocacy group formed following the fatal police shooting of Osaze Osagie. ....

PA United PAC announced its Our Communities Can t Wait campaign with three candidates on its slate for local political positions.
Tierra Williams, a co-leader of 3/20 Coalition, will run for Ferguson Township Supervisor, according to a press release. Divine Lipscomb, a Penn State student, and Richard Biever, artistic director for FUSE Productions, will run for the State College Borough Council. 
As a member of the 44% of State College residents living in poverty, it is important to have representation on council, Lipscomb said in the release. This pandemic highlighted the economic disparities here and the borough’s dependency on the university as a way of staying afloat. ....
