It s a little like the sound of a dishwasher or the
washing machine.
The sound is relentless - constantly filling the silence
of thought as Harry s parents, Aly, Dan and I talk.
Ironically, relentless is how Aly describes the half-hour treatment regime that sees Harry using three different mouthpieces, to achieve three different results for the sticky mucus on his lungs, otherwise known as cystic fibrosis. ....

Levels of IgG antibodies may influence COVID-19 outcomes

Levels of IgG antibodies may influence COVID-19 outcomes
COVID-19, the source of the current pandemic, may be caused by a single virus, but it has a variety of presentations that make treatment difficult. Children, for example, almost exclusively experience mild or asymptomatic COVID-19, while adults can develop severe or even fatal COVID-19.
But children who contract COVID-19 are at risk for a rare but serious syndrome called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Severe cases of MIS-C can lead to cardiac disease and ventricular failure, and require hospitalization and intense medical support.
Researchers Galit Alter, Ph.D., a core member of the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard, and Lael Yonker, MD, director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cystic Fibrosis Center, are working to understand why COVID-19 can lead to such distinctly different outcomes in different populations. ....

Study sheds light on pathological characteristics behind sudden cardiac death

Study sheds light on pathological characteristics behind sudden cardiac death
Nearly a half-million people a year die from sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the U.S. the result of malfunctions in the heart s electrical system.
A leading cause of SCD in young athletes is arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM), a genetic disease in which healthy heart muscle is replaced over time by scar tissue (fibrosis) and fat.
Stephen Chelko, an assistant professor of biomedical sciences at the Florida State University College of Medicine, has developed a better understanding of the pathological characteristics behind the disease, as well as promising avenues for prevention. His findings are published in the current issue of ....

Study highlights the epigenetics of life at high altitudes

Study highlights the epigenetics of life at high altitudes
Humans inhabit an incredible range of environments across the globe, from arid deserts to frozen tundra, tropical rainforests, and some of the highest peaks on Earth. Indigenous populations that have lived in these extreme environments for thousands of years have adapted to confront the unique challenges that they present.
Approximately 2% of people worldwide live permanently at high altitudes of over 2,500 meters (1.5 miles), where oxygen is sparse, UV radiation is high, and temperatures are low. Native Andeans, Tibetans, Mongolians, and Ethiopians exhibit adaptations that improve their ability to survive such conditions. Andeans, for example, display increased chest circumference, elevated oxygen saturation, and a low hypoxic ventilatory response, enabling them to thrive at exceptionally high elevations. ....
