A report into the flagship Canadian naval programme has estimated that costs for the build of 15 UK-designed frigates could breach C$80 billion.
The Canadian Department for National Defence (DND) is sticking to its guns in the planned build of 15 new frigates for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), just hours after a report issued by the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) estimated the cost of the Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC) programme had risen .

Government contractor Leidos announced plans to buy naval design firm Gibbs & Cox for $380 million, taking aim at an area of U.S. defense spending that is expected to grow amid overall decline: unmanned maritime vehicles and next-generation warships.
“The acquisition of Gibbs & Cox will extend our existing maritime business and add specific capabilities and services, such as naval architecture and Marine Engineering, 3D modeling and design, and specialty engineering to the solution set that we offer to our customers,” Leidos CEO Roger Krone said on the company’s quarterly earnings call Tuesday. ....

Turkey: First launch of indigenous ULAQ Armed Unmanned Surface Vehicle

ARES Shipyard and Meteksan Defence, which had initiated Turkey’s first indigenous Armed Unmanned Surface Vehicle (AUSV) program in October 2020, announced that the prototype vessel, ULAQ AUSV has been launched and sea trials have been started.

The Netherlands and Belgium are jointly replacing the current M-class frigates. Both countries will each receive two ASW Fregates. The intention was that these ships would be identical, but there will now be a (provisional) difference, Jaime Karremann reports on marineschepen.nl: the Belgian ships will not be equipped with 16 launch cells for missiles, but with 8, the Belgian Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder announced on February 10.
The Belgian and Dutch new ship class will be called Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigate (ASWF). (Drawing source: Dutch MoD) ....
