Fresno police have fired Officer Rick Fitzgerald after he was filmed marching with the Proud Boys last November.
A police department in California has fired a longtime officer after investigating his ties to the Proud Boys, denouncing the far-right extremists that some call a hate group.
The officer, Rick Fitzgerald, rallied with the Proud Boys in November at a pro-Trump demonstration that devolved into violence captured in video clips that resurfaced last month as online sleuths dug into Fitzgerald’s history. Announcing Fitzgerald’s firing on Friday, Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama said he disapproves of “any police officer” affiliating themselves with violent or hateful groups. ....

Last year, a special committee recommended 73 ways to reform the Fresno Police Department in the wake of local and national protests over law enforcement practices.
Now, a new 8-member board will help carry out those suggestions.
The original reform committee, created last year after the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, met for four months crafting proposed changes to Fresno PD policies and systems.
Among the top recommendations were establishing an oversight board, strengthening the existing Fresno Office of Independent Review and making changes to the way local police respond to mental and behavioral health related calls for service. ....

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) The City of Fresno and several local pastors on Tuesday called for unity as President-elect Joe Biden s inauguration nears.
Mayor Jerry Dyer was joined by Fresno City Council President Luis Chavez, Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama, and faith-based leaders.
The group urged the community to remain calm and civil as Biden is set to become the 46th President of the United States on Wednesday.
Dyer and Balderrama also discussing increased security measures throughout the city during this time. They did not give details, but said law enforcement agencies were prepared to tackle any potential violence in the city. ....
