From a 'cage', to a 'gated community'

In one of your interventions against the db project, you argued that “a bully has been allowed to enter resident’s homes; and in this case the PA made a clear choice, in favour of bullies and against residents.” Was that comment only about this particular project? Or do you see it as applicable to the direction the country is taking as a whole?
I suppose the easy answer would be that: yes, it is definitely applicable to more than just the db project alone. It is somehow a paradigm, a model, that has been replicated – and is being replicated – over and over again. ....

The birth of a literary institution

Klabb Kotba Maltin is set to celebrate the 50th anniversary since the publication of its first book on April 9, 1971. To herald this occasion,
Joseph Mizzi speaks to
Klabb Kotba Maltin published its first book 50 years ago. How did it all happen?
In the early 1960s, Malta was going through an identity resurgence which paralleled the country’s move towards political independence. Young literary figures were also moving towards new vibrancy and finding a more modern way of expressing themselves.
However, very little was being done to foster the country’s literary legacy. The number of new titles published in Malta annually rarely exceeded six books. ....

Letters to the editor - February 11, 2021

We are all made of the same stuff
I found the comments in Tuesday’s articles about my late husband, Frans Sammut, refusing to start a blog very interesting indeed.
Some commentators were sceptic about the veracity of my son’s testimony! Is it true that some people can be so naive? Is there anything to be sceptic about? I can vouch that the testimony is as true as the fact that I’m writing this letter!
There were those who claimed that they were friends and even close friends to my late husband; still no one ever came forward offering any help, nor did anyone lend a helping hand when we, as a family, were in need. ....

Author Frans Sammut rejected offer to write for anti-Daphne blog

The late renowned author Frans Sammut did not take up an offer from former prime minister Joseph Muscat to contribute to a blog intended to put Daphne Caruana Galizia in a bad light, his son said on Monday.
“It went against his personal identity,” Mark Sammut told the public inquiry into the journalist s murder.
He recalled a conversation during which his father had casually commented about Muscat’s request.
“I clearly recall that time when we were having a father and son chat at the kitchen table and at the time, it did not strike me,” said Sammut.
It was only years later, following media reports about Muscat’s testimony at the public inquiry, that reality “hit” him.  ....

The inquiry and its twists - Ranier Fsadni

The Daphne Caruana Galizia public inquiry resumes tomorrow. It’s been a dramatic series of hearings. The last episode ended with not one but two twists, though public attention fell on just one. A pity.
The twist no one missed is Robert Abela’s brazen attack on the inquiry. He has left its future in question. The panel is investigating the state but the state’s prime minister wants us to think it’s the judges who are in the dock and he who will judge them.
Their transgression: they want to be thorough, which takes time. (Though they’re not taking longer than this kind of inquiry would take, for instance, in the UK). Abela has insinuated a darker motive, one he understands: money. Now the panel has declared it’s ready to keep working without payment. ....
