Jamestown resident Carrie Wolfgang is pictured with photographs of Brian Bernhardt, her longtime partner who died of COVID-19 on April 26 at UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa. âWe really thought that we had got past this. We really thought that we had made it,â she said.
Carrie Wolfgang assumed the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic had passed.
The numbers, released daily by the Chautauqua County Department of Health and reported by the media, had long come down from the early months of the pandemic when dozens if not hundreds of new confirmed cases were recorded.
But that didn’t mean Wolfgang and her longtime partner, Brian Bernhardt, didn’t take the threat of COVID-19 and its impact seriously for more than a year. She previously had pneumonia and thus a weakened immune system while Bernhardt who long preferred a quiet, personal lifestyle that often kept him indoors and away from people had virtually no immune system at all. ....

FALCONER It will be up to the voters in November to decide if the term length for town of Ellicott councilmembers should be extended from two to four years.
On Monday, the Ellicott Town Board held a public hearing on the proposal. Patrick McLaughlin, town supervisor, said no one spoke during a public hearing about Local Law No. 1 dealing with the term length extension. He said following the public hearing, the town board approved the local law.
“It will be on the ballot this fall as a proposition,” he said. “It’s up to the voters now.” ....

Ready or not, it appears a change that goes through the heart of downtown Jamestown is just around the corner. For some, the adjustment will take us out of a comfort zone.
Last week, state Department of Transportation representatives held a virtual public hearing regarding the proposed redesign for Washington Street. Currently, the thoroughfare from Fluvanna Avenue to Second Street is four lanes.
It presents a hazard to pedestrians, bicyclists and other motorists. Any highly traveled city streets with more than two lanes promotes only one thing to drivers: speed. ....

The Jamestown City Council will be voting on how it will spend $1.5 million in federal funding.
Today, the council is slated to vote on the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) 2020 annual and five-year consolidated action plans for the federal funding it receives from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Each year Chautauqua County Soil and Water Conservation District introduces thousands of bare root seedlings into Chautauqua County.
All plants that are selected for the district’s annual sale are selected for their quality rating for hardiness in Chautauqua County and are made available to the public at an affordable rate to promote landowner conservation.
Landowners can practice conservation by planting seedlings and wildflowers to support pollinators and provide food and shelter to wildlife, reduce heating/cooling expenses, protect water quality with buffers, reduce air pollution and stabilize eroded land. Seedlings are an inexpensive way to replace trees that have been damaged, harvested or lost to disease. ....
