Deputies converge on home near Swoope

STAUNTON A woman reportedly armed with a handgun kept Augusta County authorities at bay during a standoff Tuesday that lasted several hours, a press release said.
After negotiations failed, shortly before 4 p.m. members of the Augusta County Sheriff s Office entered the home and ended the armed standoff.
County authorities were called out to the 700 block of Parkersburg Turnpike shortly before 9:30 a.m. to serve a court order and conduct a welfare check on the woman, who is in her 60s, the release said.
Threats to shoot the deputies were made, and the woman barricaded herself inside the home, according to the press release. ....

Waynesboro suspect charged with manslaughter in fatal crash


WAYNESBORO A suspect accused of fleeing a hit-and-run Friday night and then slamming his truck into a car, killing a woman who was well known in local political circles, has been charged with aggravated involuntary manslaughter in her death, according to the Waynesboro Commonwealth s Attorney s Office.
On Friday shortly before 10:30 p.m., authorities said 22-year-old Sean B. Webster, of Chesapeake, was just outside of Waynesboro s city limits in the county when he allegedly struck a Hyundai with his 2020 Ford Ranger at the intersection of U.S. 250 and Nottingham Lane. Police said he fled the scene. 
Minutes later, police said Webster s pickup entered Waynesboro before slamming into a 2019 Honda Insight at the intersection of West Main Street and Lew Dewitt Boulevard. The impact of the crash pushed both vehicles into a CVS parking lot. ....

Murder charge upgraded in Staunton homicide case


STAUNTON A suspect charged with killing a man last summer is now facing the possibility of life in prison after his murder charge was upgraded by the Staunton Commonwealth s Attorney s Office.
Last week, the Staunton grand jury indicted Daniel D. Mead, 34, on a first-degree murder charge in the slaying of 28-year-old Bradley A. Maurice, who was stabbed in the chest at the Springhill Village Apartments during the afternoon of June 14.
Mead was initially charged with second-degree murder. However, after hearing evidence during a preliminary hearing in March, the Staunton prosecutor s office upgraded the charge to first-degree murder.
At Mead s prelim, evidence showed Maurice had been kicked out of the Valley Mission, a Staunton homeless shelter, the same day he was slain. According to the testimony of Chasity Agee, Maurice s partner, the couple and their three children were picked up by Mead and taken to his apartment after he d promised them a temporary place to stay ....

Waynesboro man charged in connection with boy's death


WAYNESBORO A teenage boy is dead of a suspected overdose and a Waynesboro man has been charged in connection with his death, according to the Waynesboro Police Department.
On March 29, authorities responded to a home on the city s west end following a report of a teenager overdosing, a press release said. The teen was taken to Augusta Health in Fishersville and later transferred to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, where he was initially listed in critical condition.
The unidentified teen died Saturday night.
The press release said investigators with the Waynesboro Police Department executed a search warrant at a residence in the 600 block of North Augusta Avenue. On Friday, arrest warrants were issued for Dylan Wright, 20, of Waynesboro. ....
