During the Early Cretaceous period, 110 million to 107 million years ago, Australia was much further south than it is today. Yet fossils from several sites on the Otway Coast in Victoria show dinosaurs were common in the region. The most abundant were ornithopods — small plant-eaters with beaks and cheeks full of teeth.

ان طريقة التواصل والثقافة في عالم الاحياء الخاص بالحيتان قد تركزت بصفة خاصة لحيتان العنبر والدلافين التي ترسل امواجا صوتية لتتمكن من تحديد المواقع بالصدى.
ولكن هذه الاصوات ايضا هي دلالة ثابتة على وجود موروث ثقافي. فالحيتان القاتلة مثلا تحافظ على لهجاتها الصوتية رغم تداخلها مع اصوات المجموعات الاخرى. وتبدو الدلافين وكأنها تمتلك الميزات الاساسية للقواعد والتراكيب.
وهي البيئة الاولى و الاصلية للغة البشرية.
كان الباحث (هال وايهيد)، العالم المختص بالحيتان. يقوم بمراقبة حيتان العنبر منذ عام 1987 ، يقول : هناك المجموعات الامومية، وهي تلك التي تضم انواعا تجمعها ميزات خاصة، تمتلك لهجات وثقافات متجانسة. بعضها مقيم في منطقة معينة والبعض الاخر ينتقل من مكان لاخر. وقد سجل وايتهيد اختلافات الاصوات بين المجموعات وكأنها رموز محفوظة في جوف المحيط. وعلى امتداد الوقت، فلكل مجموعة لها الاصوات الخاصة بها. كما يبرز الميراث الثقافي في حيتان العنبر من خلال نقراتها ووقفاتها وكذلك في نمط البحث عن الطعام والغطسات المتزامنة وحتى في معدلات التبرز.
كما لاحظ الباحث في هوية العشيرة تشبه الجنسية لدى البشر.
ان هذه الحيتان تتعاطف مع ابناء عشيرتها مثلما يعمل البشر في محيط متعدد الثقافات.
وتظهر الحيتان الحدباء ايضا ادلة على هذا التوارث الثقافي. ففي كل عام تقوم الحيتان المتواجدة في مياه جزر هاواي والمكسيك بانشاد اغاني متطابقة في النغم، في موسم التزاوج، رغم ان المسافات تبتعد عن بعضها 4000 كيلو متر. كيف تتمكن من ذلك ؟ ربما تسمع هذه الاغاني من بعيد، او لعلها تتعلمها خلال اشهر الصيف عندما تتجمع المجموعات المختلفة بحثا عن الطعام. لكن الاكثر انبهارا من التناسق الجغرافي هو التغيير في هذه النداءات مع مرور الوقت. إذ تبدو تغيرات في الاغنيات في كل عام. ولكن كما هي حال التطور فيمكن لهذه المخلوقات ان تضع قفزات كبيرة في وقت
قصير.
ومع استنزاف صيد الحيتان في المنطقة القطبية الشمالية للكرة الارضية انتقل الصيادون الى الدائرة القطبية الجنوبية، واستطاعوا ان يقتلوا ما يقارب مليونين حوت في مختلف الاحجام والانواع في العقود التي تلت.
(مذبحة، ليس لها نظير في تاريخ استغلال الحياة البرية).
ومع اختفاء الحيتان بدأ الصيادون البحث عن طرائد ضعيفة. وعجزت اللجنة الدولية
IWC من السيطرة على المذبحة. لعدم قدرتها على تطبيق القوانين التي وضعتها.
وكان مالك السفن اليوناني اوناسيس اول من خالف هذه القوانين، إذ قام بتجهيز اسطول لصيد الحيتان، وجعل مواطنين نرويجيين، الخبراء في صيد الحيتان يشرفون على شؤون الملاحة.
انه كان رجل ثري بشكل لا يوصف وهو مصمم على تدمير الحيتان من دون سبب واضح، فهو لم يكن بحاجة للمال، ولم يمتثل اوناسيس للضغط الدولي ولم يلتزم بالمعاهدات الدولية. لقد كان اوناسيس كابوس علاقات عامة بالنسبة للجنة الدولية لصيد الحيتان IWC وبدا ان اوناسيس يستمتع بدور الخارج عن القانون الدولي.
كانت اطراف المقاعد على متن يخته مغطاة بجلد الاعضاء التناسلية لحيتان العنبر . واستخدمت اسنان الحيتان كمساند للارجل.
