Brett Dennen gives benefit concert in Carbondale on Friday to support children who are fighting cancer

The driving range at the River Valley Ranch Golf Course in Carbondale turns into an outdoor concert venue Friday night, when singer-songwriter Brett Dennen performs in a benefit concert for the ALC Foundation.
The concert honors the memory of Anna Cunningham, daughter of RVR Golf Course owner Red Cunningham and Julie Warren. Anna Cunningham died at age 16 in 2019 of Ewing’s sarcoma.
The ALC Foundation works to help families dealing with childhood cancer cover basic necessities and provides summer camps and treatment support.
“Anna inspired so many in our community and beyond with her bravery and positive spirit,” Warren said in a news release of the idea behind the Friday benefit concert. ....

BYU students say their academic motivation declined in 2020

Hundreds of BYU students have noticed a decrease in motivation after COVID-19 shut down a lot of normal routines without warning.
Online classes, as well as the lack of personal interaction with peers and professors, are some reasons they feel less motivated in their school work.
Several students admitted they noticed a sense of decreased motivation during Fall Semester 2020. In a poll on The Daily Universe’s Instagram account, 413, or 85%, of the 485 respondents said they felt their motivation decreased when classes moved online. ....

R. Douglas 'Doug' Wood


R. Douglas “Doug” Wood, 79, of One Park Place in Owensboro, and formerly of McLean County, died Friday, Dec. 11, 2020. Doug was born Oct. 15, 1941, in Island. He was the son of JoLynne and Narvel Wood and married to Sandra Bedwell of Kirksey.
After graduating from Sacramento High School in 1959, Doug earned his bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Kentucky and then worked as an agriculture extension specialist for the university. In 1972, he began co-owning Green Valley Farm Supply, which he then led for more than 35 years as president and general manager.
In 1998, he joined Independence Bank and served as McLean County vice president and then chairman of the McLean County Community Board. ....
