United Way invites artists to create a sculpture for 100th anniversary

CANTON – United Way invites artists from Stark and Carroll Counties to submit their qualifications for a commission to create a sculpture that celebrates United Way’s 100th anniversary.
Artists must submit their biographies and three images of previous work by July 12 at midnight at uwstark.org/100.
A pre-designated committee will then select three finalists who will be asked to create a concept for the commemorative sculpture. Each finalist will be paid $250. The artist to be commissioned will be chosen and be awarded $7,500 commission to create the sculpture, which will be completed by early May 2022.

West Branch student honored for cancer fundraising

Thirteen-year-old Gavin Clay was awarded the 2021 Inspired Youth Award, for his commitment to supporting research to find cures for childhood cancer. 
Clay has been involved in the St. Baldrick s Foundation since his Louisville City Schools classmate DJ Patterson was diagnosed with Ewing s Sarcoma. Clay s efforts over three years have led to more than $32,000 in donations in honor of Patterson, who died in 2019.     
Clay is a resident of Louisville who now attends West Branch Middle School, where his mother Krista teaches music. Clay s fundraising team kept his hometown s identity with the name Constitution Cancer Crushers, after Louisville s status as the Constitution City. ....

First place and winner of $2,500 scholarship is Payton Daugherty, Perry High School.
Second place and winner of $1,500 scholarship is Grace Kimbrough, GlenOak High School.
Third place and winner of $1,000 scholarship is Kailee Wilson, Perry High School.
Fourth place and winner of $500 scholarship is Ana Clapper, Perry High School.
The scholarships are awarded by the BBB Charitable & Educational Fund’s Sr-2-Sr program. This separate nonprofit entity was founded in 2012 by the Better Business Bureau to provide educational services to individuals ranging from high school’s seniors to senior citizens.BBB Life Lessons is a theme-based essay contest that challenges students to reflect on living a life of integrity and ethics. Plain Local's Scott is Stark County's Teacher of the Year


The celebration, typically held in person, was canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bobbi Scott is a rock in this district. She s compassionate, she s caring, and she does nothing but support the staff of GlenOak High School each and every day,  Plain Local Superintendent Brent May said when announcing to staff that Scott had won the honor. She s an ambassador to the teaching profession and to Plain Local Schools. Bobbi Scott is the perfect choice for this award.  
Scott, 57, will retire at the end of this school year after a 35-year career as an English teacher, all with Plain Local Schools. ....
