Only 4.6% of Marion's COVID vaccine doses have gone to Black residents


Marion County is not alone. This vaccination trend is occurring all across Florida and the United States.
Area officials say the vaccine disparity in communities of color is a result of many factors. Among them: hesitancy due to distrust, lack of reliable transportation and lack of reliable technology/internet access to make appointments.
Some Black community leaders note that many who live in low-income communities, no matter their race, can t afford television service, or a newspaper subscription, to get vital real-time updates of when vaccines become available.
Local Black leaders say that the disparity is not from a lack of trying. Three community outreach vaccination events have been held at Black churches around Ocala, and a fourth will be held March 18 in Reddick. ....

(TNS) - Only 4.6% of Marion County s COVID-19 vaccinations have made it into the arms of Black residents, who make up 13.5% of the county s population and 12% of the 877 local coronavirus deaths that have been reported so far.

COVID-19: Marion school cases hit 53 for past week
The number of weekly COVID-19 cases in Marion County schools ticked up by one this week, with 53 people (41 students and 12 staff members) testing positive for COVID-19 from Feb. 19-25, according to a school district report issued on Friday.
There were 52 cases reported for Feb. 12-18. There were 72 cases reported for Feb. 5-11; 70 cases reported from Jan. 29-Feb. 4; and 91 cases from Jan. 22-28. About 87% of the district s 41,000-plus students are now attending in-person school. 
The report also showed that 550 other people (512 students and 38 staff) had to be put into quarantine during the week of Feb. 19-25. That number was 536 for Feb. 12-18, 711 for Feb. 5-11, 448 for Jan. 29-Feb. 4, and 772 for Jan. 22-28. ....

Vaccination events in effort to help curb hesitancy and create accessibility for minorities

MARION COUNTY, Fla. – Some pastors in Marion County started a partnership with a local NAACP chapter and the county’s health department to make COVID-19 vaccines more accessible to minorities in the area.
There have been three separate events across the county vaccinating about 800 people and it was all through word of mouth.
The latest event was held Wednesday at Greater New Hope church in Ocala. Bishop James Stockton III said he and other pastors at historically black churches throughout the county have noticed many members of their congregation weren’t vaccinated. ....
