Death toll rises to 58 due to liquor adulterated with methanol

At least 58 people have died since October in Costa Rica from the consumption of alcoholic beverages adulterated with methanol, the Health Ministry reported.
The agency in 2020 registered 92 cases of suspected methanol poisoning of which 48 died, comprising 41 men and seven women all since the month of October. The new year has already added 15 suspected cases and 10 deaths.
The poisonings stem mostly from the consumption of a sugarcane distillate called
guaro that has illegally been adulterated with methanol. More recently, the Health Ministry has also alerted about counterfeit multipurpose cleaning products.
Police and health authorities have mobilized in San José and nearby cities in the Greater Metropolitan Area where the cases have been detected. ....

Plans for new Costa Rica airport postponed, MOPT says

Plans for a major international airport in the Alajuela canton of Orotina have been postponed, Costa Rica’s Public Works and Transport Ministry (MOPT) says.
“We have to forget about the airport in Orotina for a few years and concentrate on the Santamaría,” Transport Minister Rodolfo Méndez said, per La Nación.
The news means Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) near San José will remain Costa Rica’s primary airport for the foreseeable future. Studies conducted before the pandemic indicated SJO can feasibly serve in this role until at least 2040.
“With the pandemic, it is easy to understand that it has more life,” Méndez said. “What we have to see is how we manage the extension of that life, for the user, to meet the demand in the best possible way.” ....

Electric vehicle adoption rate in Costa Rica remains low

Costa Rica this year added 727 new electric vehicles for a total of 3,106 registered in the country, according to the Presidency. Some 330 of those were purchased by the government and assigned to public institutions, including to the Electricity Institute (ICE) and the Post Office.
The Presidency says Costa Rica is a regional leader in electric vehicles per capita. Still, the 3,106 figure is a fraction of the country’s vehicles; Costa Rica has Latin America’s highest vehicle density.
“It is important that this 2020, despite the context of the global pandemic, the acquisition and registration of electric vehicles remained,” said First Lady Claudia Dobles. ....
