Jul. 10 California s grid operator issued a plea for Californians to conserve energy usage Saturday after a fire in southern Oregon tripped interstate transmission lines, siphoning a significant amount of power needed as California endured the strongest heat wave of the summer.
The California Independent System Operator said during a Saturday news conference that three transmission lines on the California-Oregon Intertie were taken offline by the Bootleg Fire in southern Oregon, and the state has lost as many as 4,000 megawatts of power into California s grid. ....

California CCAs Form Joint Buying Group, Creating Big-Time Power Purchaser

Community choice aggregators (CCAs) have become a formidable player in California’s electricity markets,
taking over the role of supplying electricity to millions of customers from the state s investor-owned utilities, announcing big-time clean energy contracts and pushing regulators to add flexibility to state rules that stymie the growth of CCAs.
A Monday announcement again underlines that expanding influence: eight CCAs have teamed up on a joint powers authority, an entity joining public agencies in service of a common goal. In this case, the goal is buying larger amounts of clean energy; many of California’s CCAs have renewables targets more aggressive than those of the state at large. ....

A new report from California regulators is spotlighting the grid reliability challenge that states could face as they try to decarbonize their power sectors.
Earlier this month, three California agencies released an analysis outlining policies to enable the state’s transition to 100% clean electricity by 2045, as well as the potential costs and benefits associated with the policies. The road map was mandated under California’s 2018 clean energy bill, S.B. 100.
Produced by the California Energy Commission, California Public Utilities Commission and California Air Resources Board with consultation from Energy and Environmental Economics Inc., the report found that the state can meet its 100% clean energy target but that doing so will require a sustaine ....
