Vindicator will claim 15 statewide awards | News, Sports, Jobs

The Vindicator will receive 15 awards in this year’s statewide Associated Press Media Editors awards, the APME announced Tuesday.
The awards in actual order of finish first, second and third places will be announced later along with the General Excellence, Hall of Fame, Rising Star and First Amendment winners. The awards will be announced at a virtual event planned for later this spring.
More than 50 daily newspapers in Ohio submitted 1,418 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2020.
Entries for this newspaper’s division were judged by editors from The Grand Haven Tribune in Michigan. ....

CINCINNATI — A fired Hamilton County deputy displayed support for a militia group when he used its flag as his Facebook cover photo, according to a 57-page report documenting an internal administrative investigation.
Michael Stemmerding s Facebook public page posted the Three Percenter flag on Dec. 26, 2020. It was his cover photo for nearly six weeks, the WCPO 9 I-Team found. ....

AURORA, Colo. — An Aurora police officer was fired this week for being untruthful about leaving work early over a period of a month last year, department officials announced Wednesday.
Officer Robert Lyons left work early on nine days, totaling 34.25 hours, without receiving authorization from his supervisor, police said in a news release.
Chief Vanessa Wilson decided to fire Lyons, finding him in violation of department standards for unsatisfactory performance, request for leave and making a false or untruthful declaration. Police said Lyons told his supervisor that he hadn t taken time off during the hours he left early. ....
