UCI's Adriana Darielle Mejía Briscoe is named a 2021 Guggenheim Fellow

Irvine, Calif., April 9, 2021 Adriana Darielle Mejía Briscoe, an acclaimed biologist known for her work on the evolution of vision in butterflies, has been awarded a 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship. The University of California, Irvine professor of ecology & evolutionary biology is among a diverse group of 184 artists, writers, scholars and scientists worldwide to receive the prestigious award this year from a pool of almost 3,000 applicants.
Briscoe will use her fellowship to support a project titled Light, Heat and Butterflies: Adaptations of Insects to a Warming Planet. She will conduct field research and write a book weaving together the biophysics, genetics, physiology and evolution of butterflies visual and thermal adaptations to climate change. ....

Lightning strikes will more than double in Arctic as climate warms

Irvine, Calif. In 2019, the National Weather Service in Alaska reported spotting the first-known lightning strikes within 300 miles of the North Pole. Lightning strikes are almost unheard of above the Arctic Circle, but scientists led by researchers at the University of California, Irvine have published new research in the journal
Nature Climate Change detailing how Arctic lightning strikes stand to increase by about 100 percent over northern lands by the end of the century as the climate continues warming.
We projected how lightning in high-latitude boreal forests and Arctic tundra regions will change across North America and Eurasia, said Yang Chen, a research scientist in the UCI Department of Earth System Science who led the new work. The size of the lightning response surprised us because expected changes at mid-latitudes are much smaller. ....

Irvine, Calif., April 1, 2021 – Highly respected robotics and control systems researcher Magnus Egerstedt will become the new dean of The Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine, following a nationwide search.
Egerstedt will take up his new post in July at a time when UCI will be preparing to resume in-person classroom and laboratory instruction and increase in-person research after more than a year emphasizing remote operations due to the coronavirus pandemic. ....
