Google is mandating staff worldwide to have COVID-19 vaccinations to return to the office, but the tech giant may struggle to enforce the policy in Australia.
Facebook has quickly followed suit, requiring its workers in the United States to be vaccinated for an office return, though the social network’s policy does not apply in Australia at this stage, with companies here more limited in what they can require employees to do.
Qantas boss Alan Joyce is considering making vaccination mandatory for aviation workers, while local tech firms like Atlassian and Zip are giving workers leave to encourage vaccination rather than making it compulsory. ....

Bosses have the power to force their workers to get the Covid-19 vaccine under Australian labour laws, legal experts argue.
Barrister Ian Neil SC said employers may be able to use their lawful and reasonable direction powers to order employees to get the jab to guarantee the safety and wellbeing of their colleagues.

Do they have a positive obligation to require employees to be vaccinated once they become available to satisfy their obligations towards other employees? Mr Neil said.  ....

Two of Australia s leading authorities on labour law say businesses have the power to compel their staff to get vaccinated against COVID-19 under workplace laws that enable them to make lawful and reasonable directions to employees.
But employers are looking to the federal government to provide clear direction before testing this complex area of the legal system, wary of being seen to infringing on individual rights.
Discussions between the government, unions and businesses on the vaccine rollout, which is expected to begin in March, have already started but are not yet at a formal level. ....
