BBC Young Musician 2020 final review – a golden year

Whether you attribute the mood of heightened emotion to the effects of lockdown, or to the exceptional quality of the playing, the 2020 BBC Young Musician final stood out as a golden year – even in the absence of a live audience. The three who made it to the last round – 18-year-old Annemarie Federle (French horn), 19-year-old Ewan Millar (oboe) and 17-year-old Fang Zhang (percussion) – have had to wait over a year for this grand denouement because of Covid. Virtuosic, poised, unflustered, they all deserve major careers.

One pleasure of the final is seeing these young players encounter a professional symphony orchestra. Even reduced and distanced in Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, the BBC Philharmonic showed its responsive qualities, with conductor Mark Wigglesworth demanding but sympathetic with the soloists. A 17-year-old percussionist has been crowned BBC’s Young Musician 2020. Fang Zhang, born in China’s Henan province and a recent student of Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester, was revealed as the winner of the competition’s grand final on Sunday 2 May, following its broadcast on BBC Four and BBC Radio 3.
The final of the biennial competition was delayed by a year because of the pandemic, and was filmed without an audience at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall on 25 April. Three finalists each played a concerto with the BBC Philharmonic under conductor Mark Wigglesworth; competing alongside Fang Zhang were 18-year-old French horn player Annemarie Federle and 19-year-old oboist Ewan Millar. ....

LONDON, May 3 (Xinhua) A 17-year-old Chinese-born percussionist has taken the title of BBC Young Musician of 2020 in a delayed contest, and he told Xinhua on Monday that the victory means a very important milestone and a good start .
Zhang Fang, from central China s Henan Province and now studying at Chetham s School of Music in Manchester, won the final contest with a performance of Keiko Abe s marimba concerto Prism Rhapsody, which required him to play with six mallets simultaneously.
In the televised national music competition, which was held at Manchester s Bridgewater Hall on April 25 after one-year delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Zhang competed with 18-year-old French horn player Annemarie Federle and 19-year-old oboist Ewan Millar, reported the BBC. ....
