Washington High senior finalist in national Poetry Out Loud competition

Washington High School senior Rahele Megosha is advancing to the final round of the national Poetry Out Loud competition, where she will compete for the title of national champion and a $20,000 prize.
Megosha is one of 55 state and jurisdictional champions who recently competed in the semifinals for the contest Sunday. She s now one of nine finalists remaining.
The finals will be broadcast at 6 p.m. May 27 at arts.gov and will feature pre-recorded recitations from the finalists, and the live announcement of the 2021 champion.
Judges will review and score recitations based on criteria such as physical presence, voice, articulation, dramatic appropriateness, evidence of understanding, overall performance and accuracy. ....

A helicopter carrying four people over the U.S. Virgin Islands crashed on Feb. 15, killing all on board including a well-known local pilot celebrated for flying humanitarian missions in the wake of two devastating 2017 hurricanes.
The silver-and-yellow Bell 206 was registered to St. Thomas-based sightseeing and charter outfit Caribbean Buzz Helicopters and piloted by owner Maria Rodriguez, who had two-and-a-half decades of flying experience and was well versed in the rugged Virgin Islands terrain.
Three members of a family who likewise called St. Thomas home were also killed in the crash, according to multiple sources. Why the helicopter crashed in deep vegetation atop one of the island’s steep volcanic mountains is unknown. ....

A former Youngstown-area family was among those who died Monday afternoon in a helicopter crash at Botany Bay in St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands.
The St. Thomas Reformed Church revealed on its Facebook page the identity of the family of three who died in the helicopter crash as Daniel and Neisha Yannone, and their son Tyler, who was a senior at Antilles School in St. Thomas.
The Yannones, who are former Youngstown residents, who were members of that church, died in the crash along with pilot of the helicopter, Maria Rodriquez, according to The Virgin Islands Consortium.
The church published a tribute stating: “Tyler belonged to our church, to our XYG youth group; he and his parents Daniel and Neisha belonged and served this church and community in countless, unselfish ways; friends to so many. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) Authorities in the U.S. Virgin Islands on Tuesday investigated what caused a helicopter crash that killed at least four people.
The crash occurred Monday at the western end of St. Thomas around Botany Bay, said Erik Ackerson, emergency management spokesman. He said officials were not yet releasing the names of those killed.
The Virgin Islands Daily News reported that the Antilles School announced it canceled classes Tuesday because it was believed that a senior student and his family were aboard the helicopter. A school spokeswoman did not immediately return a message for comment.
Meanwhile, country singer Kenny Chesney identified one of the victims as pilot Maria Rodriguez in a tribute he posted on Instagram, calling her “a dear friend to me and to our island community.” He added that he had flown with her for more than 15 years. ....
