Follow the muse: Former Raceland teacher turns retirement into writing career

ASHLAND Teaching at Raceland High School in the early 1960s launched the education career of Marie Parsons. Retirement launched her writing career.
The Pike County native recently released a book of poems called âAn Echo In The Wind,â but itâs not her first book. She authored a novel titled âThe Devilâs Backâ in 2015.
âI retired in 2003 and for several years didnât know what to do with the rest of my life. Eating and traveling were not quite enough,â she said. âA friend got me interested in attending the Appalachian Writers Workshop in Hindman. I began writing memoir, but soon discovered I didnât like revealing so much about myself. Then I turned to short stories, and before I knew it, the stories had morphed into a novel.â ....

“Pop: An Illustrated Novel” is a new book by author Robert Gipe, set in a fictional central Appalachian county during the runup to the 2016 elections with parts of the plotline connected to the 2014 West Virginia Water Crisis.
Eric Douglas spoke with Gipe from his home in Harlan, Kentucky to find out more about the story.
This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.
Douglas:
Tell me a little bit about “Pop.” Tell me how you came to write this book.
Gipe: The book is set in Eastern Kentucky and East Tennessee and in Charleston. It concerns a woman who s been the protagonist of two prior books, Dawn Jewel, who grew up in Eastern Kentucky. In my first novel, she was the 15-year-old narrator. And now she has a 17-year-old daughter. It s set in the run up to the 2016 election. Dawn s husband works for a chemical company that is selling “coal float” to a coal company in West Virginia. ....

In her debut collection of short stories, Waynesville author Leah Hampton makes sure to grab readers from her first sentences.
The story “Parkway” begins with, “We find bodies all the time. Lots of folks come up here to die or kill or get killed.
The story “Saint” opens this way: “Your brother is going to die in twelve years.”
And in “F ckface,” the title story opening the book, Hampton begins with “Nothing’ll ever fix what’s broken in this town, but it would be nice if they’d at least get the dead bear out of the parking lot at Food Country.” ....
