Local educators semifinalists for Teacher of the Year

Two local teachers are on the short list to become Kentucky Teacher of the Year.
Steffanie Skiles from McKell Middle School in Greenup County and Miranda Newland from Campbell Elementary School in Raceland-Worthington both received the Valvoline Teacher Achievement Award. They are two of 24 from across the state to receive the recognition.
Eight apiece from the elementary, middle and high school levels were recognized with the award. The 24 are semifinalists for the Kentucky Teacher of the Year.
âIâm just beside myself regarding it,â said Steffanie Skiles, McKell Middle School music teacher. âItâs an honor to represent McKell Middle School, Greenup County Schools. As a music teacher, itâs not very often you hear at the state level about music folks in this capacity, so Iâm just beside myself.â ....

James W. Lyon, Sr. achieved a level of success in his career, and his life, to which many can only aspire. Born and raised in Raceland, with his two brothers, Lyon graduated (and was salutatorian) from Raceland High School in 1949.
Lyon went on to earn his law degree from the University of Kentucky in 1955 and returned home to begin his law firm in Raceland. After moving his law firm to Greenup, he married Jean, the love of his life, and began a family of his own. ....

City of Raceland pursues trial: Longtime senior center tenants face possible eviction

RACELAND A special judge in Greenup County has asked attorneys to submit legal briefs after conducting a short bench trial Monday in which the City of Raceland is pursuing an eviction against a long-standing tenant of the senior center.
At issue is one word: club.
See, back in 1993 the Raceland Area Senior Citizens Organization entered into a $1 per year lease with the city for the building. Characterized Monday by defense attorney Bruce Blackburn as a âvery one-sided agreement,â the lease left the city on the hook for utilities, maintenance and insurance costs on the building.
For the Seniors Citizens Organization part, they were obligated to keep the building clean and put on programming for the areaâs seniors. ....

Follow the muse: Former Raceland teacher turns retirement into writing career

ASHLAND Teaching at Raceland High School in the early 1960s launched the education career of Marie Parsons. Retirement launched her writing career.
The Pike County native recently released a book of poems called âAn Echo In The Wind,â but itâs not her first book. She authored a novel titled âThe Devilâs Backâ in 2015.
âI retired in 2003 and for several years didnât know what to do with the rest of my life. Eating and traveling were not quite enough,â she said. âA friend got me interested in attending the Appalachian Writers Workshop in Hindman. I began writing memoir, but soon discovered I didnât like revealing so much about myself. Then I turned to short stories, and before I knew it, the stories had morphed into a novel.â ....
