Pets are entering shelters than are adopted, leaving some with owners with no options

Mitzi is a shy, if not anxious cat. The 14-year-old tabby can be found hiding behind Cathy Bacan s dresser from her other two cats, who Bacan adopted after her mother died early this summer.
Like the two felines, Bacan inherited Mitzi and a dog from her uncle who died on June 11.
But the latest round of pets showed troubling signs of abuse. This abuse makes it hard for Mitzi to live with her mother s two cats, Bacan said.
They don t trust anyone, she said. The dog was really abused by my uncle; he would hit him with fly swatters, paper, shoes and anything in hand. ....

Stark County Humane Society busy responding to animal wellness calls

NIMISHILLEN TWP. The Stark County Humane Society is reminding pet owners to bring their animals inside or make sure they have proper shelter.
The shelter receives 3-5 calls per week during these weather conditions for weather checks, said Jackie Godbey, executive director. We follow Ohio Revised Code Animal Laws 959.131 Prohibitions Concerning Companion Animals.
The ORC covers the torture, torment, and committing an act of cruelty against the companion animal. This includes lack of adequate shelter during times of excessive heat, rain, wind, snow and direct sunlight.
In 2020, the agency had 844 calls for animal welfare checks. We received 60 calls in the month of January 2021, Godbey said. ....

Adoptable dogs get new wing at Stark County Humane Society

NIMISHILLEN TWP. Playful pups hoping for new homes have a brand new space at the Stark County Humane Society.
Executive Director Jackie Godbey recently opened the new wing of the county agency s building at 5100 Peach St. NE in the Louisville area.
Mixed-breed dogs, Ruby and Rocki, who have been waiting for homes over the winter, and Willie and Buckeye, waiting since sometime in January, couldn t be happier.
Ruby and Willie wagged their tails as they walked through a dog-sized door that connects their double kennels inside the new wing. Rocki and Buckeye, waiting in single-kennel spaces, cheerfully greeted everyone walking by. ....
