Sister Sephy, one of the two convicts in the Sister Abhaya murder case, on Wednesday filed an appeal in the Kerala High Court against the Thiruvananthapuram CBI Special Court verdict finding her guilty and awarding life term to her in the case.
In her appeal filed through senior lawyer P. Vijayabhanu, she contended that there was no evidence to show that Father Thomas Kottoor, another convict and Sister Sephy, third accused, had met each other on the night of March 26, 1992. There was nothing on record to show that the injuries found on the body of the deceased were inflicted by the accused persons or any one of them.

The dead nun's slippers were scattered on the convent kitchen floor -- one near the entrance, the other by the fridge.
Her white veil was found snagged on the door. An open bottle of water was leaking onto the tiles.
In the corner of the room was an ax.
Officers discovered the crime scene, described in court documents seen by CNN, at St. Pius X Convent Hostel in southern India on March 27, 1992.
Later that day, they found Sister Abhaya's body in a nearby well at the Indian convent, in the city of Kottayam, Kerala.

Kochi (Kerala) [India], January 19 (ANI): The Kerala High Court has agreed to hear the appeal moved by Father Thomas Kottoor challenging the trial court verdict convicting him for the murder of Sister Abhaya.
A Division Bench of Justices K Vinod Chandran and MR Anitha admitted Father Kottoor's appeal.
In his appeal, Father Kottoor has submitted that "the trial court's judgment is based on unconnected story circumstances culled out from unreliable solitary witnesses. The trial and conviction of the accused by the court below in all respects are vitiated by grave illegalities and irregularities."
Kottoor, along with Sister Sephy, a nun, were convicted on December 23, 2020, by a CBI Court, Thiruvananthapuram for the murder of 19-year-old nun Sister Abhaya. Thereafter, they were sentenced to imprisonment for life.

Kochi: A Catholic priest convicted in the Sister Abhaya murder case moved the Kerala High Court on Monday, challenging the verdict by the Special CBI court, Thiruvananthapuram, awarding him double life sentence.
Father Thomas Kottoor, currently in jail, alleged that the order of the conviction and sentence passed by the Special CBI Court was "absolutely improper and incorrect".

The former judge of the Supreme Court, Cyriac Joseph, who is alleged to have attempted to interfere with the forensic analysis and judicial processes in the Sister Abhaya murder case, has defended himself saying that his hands are clean.
It was alleged that Mr. Joseph had viewed the narco-analysis CDs of Father Thomas Kottoor, Sister Sephy and Father Jose Puthrukkayail at the Forensic Analysis Laboratory (FSL), Bangalore, during the course of investigation. While Fr. Puthrukkayail was let off earlier, a CBI Special Court had convicted the two others last week in the case.
