Dawn Gaetke wanted to grow and sell mushrooms from her suburban yard for some extra income.
After a year of working with Inver Grove Heights officials to change local rules, Gaetke s wish was granted this month and she already has a modest crop of mushrooms sprouting from logs on her property.
Having suburban market gardens is going to make our food system more resilient, she said. What I m doing is part of the local food movement.
Across the metro, suburban communities are allowing and in some cases encouraging residents to grow produce in community spaces or their own yards. The trend appears poised to grow to more communities, proponents and city officials said. ....

The
Cooking with C.H.O.I.C.E.S. family workshops are a series of free three-week workshops offered at the C.H.O.I.C.E.S Community Teaching Kitchen in northeast Atlanta that teach young people and their families how to prepare nutritious meals at home. The workshops provide families with strategies to stretch their limited food budgets through effective advance meal planning and smart shopping at farmers markets and grocery stores. The program also engages parents and other caregivers in addressing their own health and chronic disease issues through healthy eating choices.

Nine U.S. cities will receive a total of $745,000 for winning the 2021 Childhood Obesity Prevention and Environmental Health and Sustainability Awards. City mayors who have helped children and families thrive by initiating exceptional programs were awarded.
In a press release, the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) has joined the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America (ABFHA) to award over $4.3 million to 54 cities of the nation.
USCM CEO and Executive Director Tom Cochran said that mayors believe how safe, clean, and green spaces help improve children and families health status. He also said that the ABFHA helps USCM support more cities by awarding worthy cities. ....
